Ander Herrera makes selfless return to Zaragoza for free

The 37-year-old former Manchester United midfielder has returned to his boyhood club and will donate his salary to the Real Zaragoza Foundation.

Ander Herrera makes selfless return to Zaragoza for free

Former Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera, 37, has returned to Real Zaragoza in Spain choosing to play without taking a salary as the boyhood club begins a difficult campaign in the country’s third tier.

Herrera’s return, 15 years after leaving Zaragoza, represents an emotional homecoming for a player whose professional journey began in the Aragonese city.

The midfielder joined the club’s academy at 11 and made his first-team debut in February 2009.

Rather than treating his comeback as the final chapter of a decorated career, Herrera has embraced it as an opportunity to give something back to the club that helped shape him.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Herrera described the return as one of the dreams he most wanted to fulfil.

“This is probably the last dream that I wanted to make come true,” Herrera said.

He added that returning was about much more than football, recalling the club’s influence on his development both as a player and as a person.

Herrera left Zaragoza in 2011 for Athletic Club before building an impressive career that took him to Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Boca Juniors.

At Manchester United, Herrera made 189 appearances and won the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League.

His time at Paris Saint-Germain brought further domestic honours, while he also won the Copa del Rey with Athletic Club in 2024.

His return to Zaragoza therefore comes after more than 500 professional appearances and years spent competing at the highest levels of European football.

Yet the midfielder has deliberately chosen a very different challenge.

Zaragoza were relegated from Spain’s second tier at the end of the 2025/26 season and are now competing in Primera Federación, the third level of Spanish football.

The club’s decline has been particularly painful for supporters, given its historic standing in Spanish football and European success.

Herrera has responded by offering his experience to the rebuilding project rather than dwelling on the club’s recent difficulties.

“I want to put my quality, my experience and my passion to try to help my team to come back where I think we belong,” he told BBC Sport.

The financial aspect of the move has added another layer to the story.

Herrera initially wanted to play entirely without pay, and his eventual minimum salary is being directed to the Real Zaragoza Foundation.

The gesture reflects the personal significance he attaches to the club.

Herrera has said he does not need another lucrative contract after a successful career and would rather contribute to the institution that gave him his professional opportunity.

His connection to Zaragoza runs deeper than his own playing career.

His father, Pedro Herrera, also played for the club and later served as its general manager, while Herrera grew up supporting the side before eventually becoming one of its players.

One of his earliest football memories was Zaragoza’s famous 1995 Cup Winners’ Cup triumph over Arsenal.

Years later, Herrera would win the same European competition with Manchester United.

The significance of his return was also evident during the club’s preparations for the new season.

Herrera has taken on a leadership role within the squad, including serving as captain during a recent traditional ceremony marking the beginning of the 2026/27 campaign.

His arrival has also helped inject renewed optimism into a club facing the task of rebuilding its status.

The move had been discussed previously.

Herrera considered returning in 2024 but ultimately remained at Athletic Club.

Two years later, conversations with Zaragoza’s sporting director Lalo Arantegui, coach Ibai Gómez and members of the club’s ownership helped persuade him to make the move.

Now, Herrera is urging Zaragoza to look forward rather than remain trapped by its troubled recent history.

“Let’s stop crying about what happened in the past. Let’s build on the future. Let’s come every day to training with a smile,” he said.

For a player who once competed for major European honours at Old Trafford and the Parc des Princes, the challenge of playing in Spain’s third tier might appear an unlikely next step.

For Herrera, however, the destination matters more than the status.

His return is a powerful reminder that, after years of elite football and international travel, some of the most meaningful moves in a player’s career can lead back to where everything began.
