Arrest of Godfrey Enyereibe Amadi and Sidney Onyemere over alleged defilement of a minor sparks outrage in Imo State community

The Imo State Police Command arrested Godfrey Enyereibe Amadi and Sidney Onyemere in Nekede, Owerri West Local Government Area, on Wednesday, following the alleged serial defilement of a seven-year-old girl.

The suspects, who are prominent members of the Council of Elders in Umuezereokam Village within the Umuoma Autonomous Community, were detained after the family of the victim formally reported the repeated assaults to law enforcement authorities.

Illicit incidents reportedly occurred on multiple occasions across various locations in the community before the young victim alerted the local youth wing.

The apprehension of the two community figures has triggered an immediate and volatile reaction from residents, with many demanding absolute transparency and accountability from the criminal justice system.

A prominent native of the community, Mr Oparaku, stated that the development must serve as a catalyst to expose all wrongdoers within the area, insisting that justice must prevail regardless of the status of the accused.

Youth President of the community, Okechukwu Ozioma, echoed these sentiments during a press briefing, alleging that previous attempts had been made by influential figures to shield the suspects from prosecution due to their elevated social standing.

Mother of the victim, Mrs Chizoma Ndukuba, expressed profound shock over the ordeal and demanded that the suspects face the full wrath of the law to ensure the protection of other vulnerable children.

Mrs Ndukuba appealed directly to the Imo State Government, the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and Child Development, and international human rights organizations to intervene and prevent any subversion of the legal process.

Local leaders have further alleged that this is not an isolated incident, noting that Mr Onyemere had previously faced public disciplinary measures and flogging for the alleged abuse of a thirteen-year-old neighbour.

The harrowing history of unaddressed allegations has intensified the community resolve to see the current judicial process through to its logical conclusion.
