Ololade Ahmed, the Grammy-nominated Nigerian artist widely known as Asake, has addressed why he predominantly sings in Yoruba rather than English. In a recent interactive session shared on X, the “Ome Ope” singer clarified that although he is capable of performing in English, he prefers to sing in his native dialect.
Asake expressed his commitment to authenticity, stating, “I am more comfortable singing in Yoruba; it’s not that I can’t sing in English. If you fvck with me, fvck with me with my Yoruba. If not, then don’t, I cannot be what I’m not.” His remarks highlight his dedication to remaining true to his roots and identity, regardless of the language preferences of his audience.
The majority of the tracks on Asake’s three albums—“Mr Money With The Vibes” (2022), “Work of Art” (2023), and the latest “Lungu Boy”—are performed in Yoruba. The artist’s choice to embrace his native language has resonated with many fans, reinforcing his unique position in the Nigerian music scene.
