Ghanaian chef, Ebenezer Smith, popularly known as Millennium Chef Smith, has been detained at the La Police Station for allegedly falsifying a Guinness World Record for marathon cooking.
Smith claimed to have cooked non-stop for 820 hours and 25 minutes, from February 1 to March 6, 2024, and presented a certificate as evidence of his achievement.
However, Guinness World Records confirmed to the BBC that the certificate was invalid and that Smith does not hold the title.
The current record holder is Alan Fisher from Ireland, who set the record by cooking continuously for 119 hours, 57 minutes, and 16 seconds in Matsue, Shimane, Japan, from September 28 to October 3, 2023.
Smith’s arrest followed a complaint from a sponsor who had donated approximately 350,000 cedis to support Smith’s cook-a-thon, only to discover the fraud.
Smith had also hosted a press conference at La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra, claiming to be the new record holder, and posted about his supposed achievement on social media.
