Ataoja backs Aregbesola as he openly endorses ADC, shaking Osun’s political landscape ahead of the 2026 election
The political landscape in Osun State shifted dramatically after the Ataoja of Osogbo, His Royal Majesty Oba Jimoh Oyetunji Olanipekun, Laroye II, openly endorsed former governor Rauf Aregbesola and the African Democratic Congress during the party’s constituency tour, a move that swiftly rattled opposition parties.

The rare public declaration marked one of the most decisive moments yet in the build-up to the 2026 gubernatorial election and signalled strong traditional backing for Aregbesola.
The monarch announced his support during a courtesy visit by Aregbesola and ADC leaders to the palace in Osogbo, stating that he would stand by the former governor without hesitation.
Oba Oyetunji said the visit carried significant symbolic weight, adding that Osogbo’s political unity would remain firmly behind the former governor.
Oba Oyetunji described Aregbesola as a leader who remained loyal during difficult moments, recalling how the former governor refused pressure from political actors who sought to undermine the throne.
The monarch said that his endorsement stemmed from a desire to return Osun to a governance model centred on social welfare and human capital development.
Multiple political sources confirmed that the monarch’s declaration sent shockwaves across rival parties, given his influence among traditional rulers in the state.
One source said that for a First Class Oba to openly support a political figure outside the ruling party was an unusually bold move that instantly changed the tone of pre-election positioning.
According to the source, no major opposition figure has openly challenged the monarch’s stance, a silence interpreted within political circles as an acknowledgment of the monarch’s reach and Aregbesola’s enduring popularity.
The endorsement was described as a powerful signal that Osun’s political dynamics may shift sharply as campaign activities intensify.
The public show of loyalty reinforced Aregbesola’s standing among his supporters and gave the ADC a significant morale boost as it moves to expand its influence across the state.
