Babachir Lawal Quits ADC after Atiku Abubakar emerged as the party’s presidential candidate, citing concerns over the primary process

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Babachir Lawal has announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

Babachir Lawal said the decision was driven by his opposition to Atiku Abubakar’s candidacy and concerns about the conduct of the party’s presidential primary.

According to Lawal, the primary election results were predetermined to favour the former vice president.

The former SGF alleged that the process lacked credibility and stated that he would not participate in what he described as a political machinery designed to secure Atiku Abubakar’s victory in 2027.

In a strongly worded reaction, Lawal argued that President Bola Tinubu would be a better leader than Atiku Abubakar.

The former SGF further criticised the ADC presidential candidate, describing him as incompetent and unfit for the nation’s highest office.

Lawal also accused Atiku Abubakar of promoting divisive politics, alleging that the former vice president exhibits tribal and religious bias.

The former SGF maintained that such qualities should not be associated with the presidency.

The resignation marks a significant development within the ADC as political parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Lawal has been a notable figure in opposition politics and his departure is expected to generate debate within the party and across the wider political landscape.

Neither Atiku Abubakar nor the ADC leadership had publicly responded to Lawal’s allegations at the time of filing this report.

The latest development underscores growing tensions within opposition ranks as parties intensify preparations for what is expected to be a fiercely contested presidential race in 2027.
