Bayern face tough Arsenal test without Olise

Harry Kane calls on Bayern Munich’s squad to step up against Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal after Michael Olise’s suspension, with Luis Díaz returning to form ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League clash.

Bayern Munich face a stern Champions League examination against Arsenal at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, with England captain Harry Kane urging his teammates to rise to the occasion in the absence of suspended winger Michael Olise, as head coach Vincent Kompany prepares his side for a meeting with Mikel Arteta’s in-form Premier League champions.

The fixture arrives at a significant moment for Bayern, whose attacking strength was on full display during Saturday’s emphatic 6-1 Bundesliga victory over RB Leipzig.

However, Olise’s suspension presents a fresh challenge for the German champions against an Arsenal side that has made an impressive start to the season.

Olise was sent off during Bayern’s 3-3 Champions League draw away to Norwegian side Viking last week after receiving two yellow cards within a minute.

The dismissal followed a foul and a subsequent confrontation with Viking captain Zlatko Tripić, during which Olise threw the ball at the Norwegian player’s head.

The suspension is an unwelcome setback for Bayern, given the French international’s growing influence since joining the club from Crystal Palace in 2024.

His creativity, movement and ability to produce decisive moments have made him an important part of the team’s attacking structure.

The London-born winger, who spent part of his youth career in Arsenal’s academy system, has continued to attract attention with his performances.

His absence against Arsenal means Bayern must find alternative ways to supply Kane and maintain their attacking threat.

Speaking after the victory over Leipzig, Kane acknowledged the significance of losing a player of Olise’s quality but insisted that Bayern’s depth should allow others to make their mark.

“Missing one of your biggest players, you’re going to feel it for sure, but that’s where other people have to step up and show they can take their opportunity,” Kane said.

“We talk about the squad a lot, we talk about being ready for your moment and whoever plays will have to be ready.”

Kane’s comments reflect the challenge facing Bayern as they prepare for a demanding European encounter.

The German champions have relied heavily on the England striker and Olise for attacking output, particularly while Jamal Musiala continues to contend with fitness problems.

Kane has also demonstrated that his contribution extends well beyond finishing chances.

During the draw against Viking, Bayern found themselves two goals behind before the striker scored twice and helped drive the comeback.

His ability to drop deep, create opportunities and link play gives Bayern a valuable alternative when their usual attacking combinations are disrupted.

Against Arsenal, those qualities could prove particularly important if Olise’s absence affects the team’s rhythm in the final third.

Saturday’s performance against Leipzig offered further encouragement, with Luis Díaz delivering one of his strongest displays since arriving from Liverpool in 2025.

The Colombian winger scored a hat-trick and supplied an assist in a commanding performance that helped Bayern respond to consecutive draws.

Díaz’s contribution was especially encouraging after a difficult spell in which his performances had attracted scrutiny.

His pace, direct running and willingness to attack defenders provided a reminder of the qualities Bayern hoped he would bring to their forward line.

The 29-year-old could now have a central role against Arsenal, particularly with Olise unavailable and Musiala not fully fit.

Díaz’s ability to operate across the attacking line offers Kompany flexibility as he considers how best to maintain Bayern’s threat.

Bayern also have other options in Serge Gnabry and Lennart Karl, although both players will be looking to make a stronger impression as competition intensifies.

The match offers an opportunity for the supporting cast to demonstrate that the team can remain effective without one of its most influential attackers.

The meeting also carries a sense of unfinished business for Bayern. Arsenal defeated the German side 3-1 in last season’s Champions League league phase, following a closely contested quarter-final encounter between the clubs in 2023-24, when Bayern progressed by a single goal on aggregate.

For Kane, the prospect of facing Arsenal brings a familiar English rivalry into a European setting.

The former Tottenham Hotspur captain has faced the north London club many times during his career, but his focus is now firmly on helping Bayern overcome one of their strongest continental rivals.

Arsenal arrive in Munich with considerable confidence after winning 10 of their opening 11 matches in all competitions, according to the figures reported ahead of the fixture.

The club will also be eager to make a statement after losing last season’s Champions League final to Paris Saint-Germain in a penalty shoot-out.

Arteta’s side have developed a reputation for defensive organisation, controlled possession and an ability to press opponents aggressively.

Those qualities could test Bayern’s ability to create chances without Olise, particularly if Arsenal succeed in limiting the space available to Kane and Díaz.

Kane, however, believes matches of this magnitude are precisely the occasions Bayern should welcome.

“It’s a big game and we’re playing against one of the best teams in Europe, you have to always enjoy these occasions,” the striker said.

“We’re testing ourselves against one of the best, we’re here at home, the energy, the fans, it’s going to be a special night.”

Bayern’s 6-1 victory over Leipzig has provided a timely boost, but the scale of the challenge against Arsenal will be different.

European fixtures often leave less room for mistakes, and the German champions will need to combine their attacking ambition with greater consistency after recent draws against Augsburg and Viking.

For Kompany, the immediate task is to ensure that Olise’s suspension does not disrupt the balance that made Bayern so effective against Leipzig.

The coach will also need to consider Musiala’s fitness and identify the best combination of players to support Kane.

The encounter offers both clubs an opportunity to measure their progress against elite opposition early in the Champions League campaign.

Bayern will have home advantage and renewed confidence after their weekend performance, while Arsenal will arrive determined to demonstrate that their strong domestic form can translate into another significant European result.

Olise’s absence is a clear setback for Bayern, but Kane’s message is straightforward: the responsibility must be shared.

Whether Díaz and the rest of Bayern’s attacking players can respond will be one of the defining questions of Wednesday’s contest.

The key match details have been cross-checked against Bayern Munich’s official match report, UEFA’s Champions League team news and contemporary coverage of the Leipzig victory.

Bayern beat Leipzig 6-1 on 17 October, with Díaz scoring three goals and providing an assist; UEFA lists Olise as suspended for the Arsenal fixture.
