Bolaji Ogunmola responds to social media criticism over on-screen romance, affirming professionalism and boundaries in her films

Lagos-based actress and filmmaker Bolaji Ogunmola on Tuesday responded sharply to criticism from social media users regarding her on-screen chemistry with co-star Daniel in her latest film, The Bloom After.

The comment, posted by a user with the handle “I hate lies,” suggested that Ogunmola’s frequent kissing scenes with Daniel could spark real-life romantic feelings and questioned why she did not share similar scenes with another co-star, Anthony.

The user referenced the early relationship between actors Yul Edochie and Judy Austin as a cautionary example.

Reacting to the critique, Ogunmola expressed frustration with the focus on her personal conduct rather than her work.

She warned that continued online commentary of this nature might prompt her to reduce her social media presence to concentrate on professional commitments.

Ogunmola emphasised the importance of boundaries and professionalism, stating, “We don’t even talk outside of work. Your opinion about things is a direct representation of who you are and what you stand for.”

She further criticised the reduction of her film’s narrative to mere kissing scenes, highlighting the movie’s broader themes of personal growth and self-discovery.

The actress encouraged viewers to focus on the film’s message, urging audiences to recognise the value of self-worth and dignity, both on-screen and in real life.

The Bloom After explores the journey of a woman rediscovering herself after dedicating her life to a cause she believed in, underscoring Ogunmola’s commitment to meaningful storytelling in Nollywood.
