CEO branding as organisation’s touchstone and gemstone

CEO branding as organisation’s touchstone and gemstone

People are usually skeptical of organisations – a disposition that lingers until they’ve sized up and approved of the brain behind the business. The founder will be well advised to provide the raw material needed for this estimation.

How can a quick Google search on a business leader reveal no digital footprint beyond a dated LinkedIn profile and a conference bio from three years ago? It is akin to clapping with one hand when a company has a name, but its chief executive officer (CEO) is nondescript.

Given that they thoroughly know the business, the founder’s voice is the most authentic and authoritative. Yet, this institutional knowledge has remained the least-leveraged communications asset in businesses.

There’s so much corporate channels can deliver when it comes to telling the company’s trajectory. But through personal branding, the founder says, “Here I am!” so that the market can echo, “There you are!”

Stripped of all technicalities, CEO branding is the founder being the face of the organisation. It’s an executive presence geared towards earning the confidence of publics.

Audiences are inquisitive about who’s leading the company, their values, viability and thought process, as well as their motivations for starting the journey. To this extent, invisibility can prove costlier than visibility.

The public perception of a visionary remains the gold standard by which their business is judged (touchstone) and bears the Crown Jewels (gemstone).

This was succinctly summarised by the American serial entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk: “You can use your personal brand – who you are – to market your business, or your personal brand can actually be the business.”

Influence Comes from Capability Being Seen

CEO branding is a high-impact public relations and inbound marketing strategy through wielded influence. It connects content to a clear commercial path without making every post feel like a sales pitch.

At the heart of every organisation raking in compounding value is a visible leader. Their visibility creates familiarity. Familiarity facilitates trust. Trust accelerates business.

Founder-led marketing fosters feelings in audiences, and as Maya Angelou famously observed, “People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. But people will never forget how you made them feel.”

People buy into the person before buying into the company. Trust precedes transactions. A sale is first made in the mind before the customer can bring out their credit card. Investors assess leadership before the pitch deck lands in their inbox.

Clients patronise leaders whose views they respect. Top talent join companies led by people they believe in. Partners settle for firms whose leaders have intellectual integrity.

Founders can ascertain the health of their personal brand by finding out if, within the past six months, they have:

  • Spoken at an event.
  • Made an engaging social media post.
  • Appeared on a podcast.
  • Been invited as an expert to top-tier TV niche programming.
  • Been quoted in news reports and features.
  • Published an article.
  • Shared a professional opinion publicly.
  • Participated in industry discussions.

Authority is Authentically, Not Algorithmically, Acquired

With everyone having access to the same artificial intelligence, trust that comes from CEO branding has become the differentiator.

The ubiquity and parity of technology are now forcing founders to compete on authenticity, credibility, and trusted perspective, necessitating a recalibration of business strategy.

The shift from tech-first to trust-first redirects focus from your preferred AI tools to who you are and what you represent.

Reputation cannot be synthesised but is built through consistent, authentic human interaction; hence the need for personal branding. Perspectives and trust are assets that cannot be replicated or commoditised.

The proliferation and democratisation of AI tools have paradoxically increased the value of human distinctiveness, making authenticity and earned trust true sources of sustainable competitive advantage.

As advanced tech levels the playing field, the content creator becomes the primary mechanism for differentiation and market leadership.

While competitors are exposed to the same large language model, human voice in the form of unique storytelling, expertise, and trustworthiness remains the unparalleled edge that drives loyalty and impact.

With everyone having equal access to the same AI capabilities, disproportionate influence and opportunities will flow to those with strong personal reputations and clear perspectives.

In a world saturated with infinite AI-slop, the founder who doesn’t define and drive their company’s narrative in the open market has unwittingly relinquished that critical responsibility to algorithms and competitors.

Given the scarcity of genuine human perspective, social media and web algorithms bestow authority and visibility on creators who articulate their grind, exude expertise, share lived experiences, and show proof.

How CEOs Can Conveniently Brand Their Expertise

This would be through journaling or documentation where the CEO consistently shows up in public, solving real problems in their own words as the need arises. Outsourcing this task to a social media manager is not ideal.

Founders must stop perceiving posting on social platforms as a vanity project – a distraction from “real work.” Peers who are visible in people’s feeds and timelines know what they’re after and achieving.

The business leader who clearly articulates industry insights, market dynamics, and vision in public demonstrates strategic clarity and market authority, with trust at scale in tow.

The CEO isn’t being asked to become a skit maker or lifestyle influencer but to treat leadership content as an extension of their daily operations.

They don’t need to post every day or share their private lives. A thoughtful weekly piece, regular article, short video, podcast appearance, or industry discussion can be enough when the narrative arc is clear and consistent. Here’s a routine the founder can follow:

  1. Identify a particular problem your audience keeps hinting at but can’t quite pinpoint.
  2. Publicly name the pain point and answer it in plain language.
  3. Repurpose and adapt the answer in different formats (post, reels, voice note, carousel, and shorts) until it sticks.
  4. Track what people ask in your comments/DMs; then make your response to their questions your next post.

The founder can also squeeze out time from their choking schedule to run a sustainable content system, thus:

  • Record one conversation, like a solo deep dive, a podcast interview, or filmed team training.
  • Curate the four thoughts from that conversation.
  • Edit those thoughts into four videos with distinct talking points.
  • Pull the core submissions into a newsletter about personal branding.
  • Transcribe the video into three or four text posts about personal branding.

These become the CEO’s month-long content calendar. All it takes is social listening and being in front of the camera once.

Indeed, content creation can be effectively executed without distracting the business leader from their core responsibilities.

Sound Profound to Be Found

CEO branding is about being visible and voluble about the things you actually know well and deeply care about, which can survive contact with audience reality.

There is strong competition for attention because audiences have become more selective about the content they consume.

To be found, the founder must weigh in on topical conversations in their industry with insights that add value – not amplify the noise. Showing up with templated content is worse than not showing up at all.

The most engaging founder messages capture behind-the-scenes efforts to crack nutty issues, satisfy a difficult client, address persistent customer pain points, a widely-held notion that turned out to be wrong, or something that happened that changed how you think.

Generic educational content and formulaic leadership advice rarely hold attention; even ChatGPT machines are trained to know this.

You’d be positioning yourself as profound by postulating on pervasive industry practices that you completely disagree with, while highlighting what you do differently.

You can post about a difficult decision you had to make. A lightbulb moment. A mistake that changed your orientation. Something about your trade and industry that you now believe differently. Hard lessons learned from a missed target, or a key insight from a client meeting.

These precise and relevant perspectives will attract media mentions that would make the founder highly visible in AI overviews and answer/generative engines.

Having and espousing a point of view on your sector builds a natural, steady cadence, language register and knowledge base that lend themselves to LinkedIn posts, bylines, quotations and keynote speeches without sounding manufactured. That’s one of the ways your personal brand works 24/7 while your logo only works 9-5.

Why CEO Branding Matters:

Ø It is a credibility/trust engine.

Ø It’s an organic growth lever.

Ø People “buy” from profiles, not pages.

Ø Talent track vision – not job description: They want to know who they’ll be working for before clicking the “Apply” button.

Ø Top-of-mind recall of the organisation.

Ø It creates an owned rather than a rented audience/community: the reach delivered by algorithms can vanish overnight.

Ø It is the market differentiator.

Ø Investor due diligence has gone digital.

Ø It is the cheapest yet most effective distribution channel for organisations.

Ø It opens doors to speaking opportunities and investor conversations.

Final Thought: Some of these may be low-hanging fruit, but they compound into an enduring advantage. Meanwhile, CEO branding is the Hail Mary in times of crises and uncertainty, having built credibility over time through consistency – not urgency.

The imperative for alignment and consistency cannot be overemphasised as founders get involved in marketing. The voice on stage must match the voice in a sales email six months later.

Anything to the contrary will evaporate the trust built the moment someone senses the contradiction.
