The 22-year-old Argentina international joins from sister club Strasbourg on a seven-year contract as Xabi Alonso continues reshaping Chelsea’s squad

Chelsea have completed the signing of 22-year-old Argentina international Valentin Barco from sister club Strasbourg on a seven-year contract, giving new manager Xabi Alonso another versatile option as the Premier League club continues an ambitious summer rebuild.

Barco’s arrival, confirmed on Sunday, makes the defender Chelsea’s seventh signing of the transfer window and the second player to move to Stamford Bridge from Strasbourg this summer after Emmanuel Emegha.

The deal also marks the 13th transfer between the two clubs since the beginning of last season, underlining the increasingly close relationship between the two sides, who share the same ownership group.

Barco arrives at Chelsea after an impressive spell with Strasbourg, where the 22-year-old helped the French club secure qualification for the Conference League.

The Argentine can operate as a left-back or in midfield, offering Alonso additional tactical flexibility as the former Bayer Leverkusen manager continues to reshape his squad.

Barco is no stranger to English football.

The player previously spent a short period in the Premier League with Brighton three seasons ago before joining Strasbourg on loan in 2024.

The move was made permanent a year later after Barco played a role in Strasbourg’s successful campaign.

The Argentine’s profile also carries international pedigree.

Barco was part of the Argentina squad that reached the World Cup final, while his competitive temperament was notably on display during the semi-final when he became involved in an angry exchange with Jude Bellingham following exuberant celebrations in front of England players.

His move to Chelsea adds another intriguing chapter to a career that has already taken him from South America to the Premier League and Ligue 1.

Barco’s signing is part of a major summer recruitment drive at Chelsea, with the club seeking to build a squad capable of competing under Alonso.

The Blues confirmed the arrival of veteran striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton on Saturday, while Maxence Lacroix joined from Crystal Palace and Morgan Rogers arrived from Aston Villa.

Chelsea have also completed deals for Marco Palestra, Emegha and Geovany Quenda during an increasingly active transfer window.

The recruitment drive reflects the scale of the task facing Alonso as he begins his tenure.

With Barco now added to an expanding group of new arrivals, the Chelsea manager will be expected to blend youth, experience and tactical versatility into a squad capable of challenging on multiple fronts.

For Barco, the move represents a return to the Premier League and an opportunity to establish himself at one of England’s most prominent clubs after developing his game in France.
