Richarlison’s dramatic winner seals Spurs’ 2-1 Chelsea victory

Tottenham overcome a second-half red card as Richarlison’s 90th minute strike and Sandro Tonali’s first goal hand Chelsea and Xabi Alonso a spirited pre-season defeat in Sydney

Brazil international Richarlison scored a dramatic 90th minute winner as Tottenham Hotspur defeated Chelsea 2-1 in a fiercely contested pre-season friendly at Stadium Australia in Sydney on Saturday, overcoming the challenge of playing the entire second half with 10 men after defender Kevin Danso’s dismissal.

The entertaining contest before a crowd of 80,363 also marked the first Tottenham goal for club record signing Sandro Tonali, whose deflected strike gave the North London side an early advantage before Brazilian teenager Estevao restored parity for Chelsea just two minutes later.

The victory provided another encouraging step for Tottenham during preparations for the new campaign and highlighted the resilience shown by the side despite being placed under sustained pressure after Kevin Danso received a straight red card shortly after the interval.

Tottenham manager Thomas Frank fielded a strong starting line-up that included new arrivals Tonali and Andy Robertson, while Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso also named several senior players as preparations intensified ahead of the Premier League season.

The match burst into life after a cagey opening when tempers flared following a robust challenge by Conor Gallagher on Chelsea midfielder Dario Essugo. Players from both teams became involved before the referee restored order, cautioning Gallagher.

Tottenham made the breakthrough in the 19th minute after Manor Solomon surged down the right flank and found Tonali on the edge of the penalty area.

The Italy international struck first time, with his effort taking a decisive deflection beyond the goalkeeper to register his maiden goal for the club.

Chelsea responded almost immediately. Midfielder Romeo Lavia drove purposefully through the centre before delivering an inviting cross that found Estevao at the far post, with the young Brazilian producing a composed header to level the scores.

Both sides continued to create openings before the break, but neither goalkeeper was seriously troubled as the teams went into half-time level at 1-1.

The match changed significantly early in the second half when Kevin Danso, introduced during the interval, was sent off after bringing down Joao Pedro as the Chelsea forward raced clear on goal.

With the numerical advantage, Chelsea dominated possession and repeatedly threatened to find a winner.

Estevao came closest when his effort crashed against the crossbar, while Tottenham were forced to defend resolutely as wave after wave of Chelsea attacks tested their organisation.

Despite the pressure, Chelsea were unable to convert their superiority into goals, a frustration that will concern Alonso as the Spanish coach continues to shape his squad following an active summer transfer window.

Tottenham’s disciplined defensive display ultimately laid the platform for a memorable finish.

Deep into stoppage time, Richarlison found space inside the penalty area and calmly side-footed the decisive goal to spark jubilant celebrations among the travelling supporters.

The result handed Alonso his first defeat since taking charge of Chelsea, following last week’s entertaining 6-4 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers.

Chelsea will now continue their pre-season tour with a meeting against Juventus in Hong Kong on Wednesday.

For Tottenham, the success capped an encouraging overseas tour that also included a 2-0 victory over Auckland FC and a 1-1 draw against Sydney FC, offering further signs of progress ahead of the new season.

Speaking after the match, Richarlison’s late intervention ensured Tottenham left Australia with renewed confidence, while Tonali’s impressive first goal suggested the Italian midfielder could quickly become an influential figure in the club’s midfield.

Chelsea, meanwhile, will take positives from long spells of control despite the defeat, but Alonso is likely to demand greater ruthlessness in front of goal as more new signings integrate into the squad before the competitive season begins.
