Chinese eye implant helps blind patient recognise numbers, letters

The experimental technology has restored limited visual perception to a man who had lived with blindness for more than 30 years, offering fresh hope for people with certain forms of vision loss.

A Chinese hospital has implanted a tiny electronic device in the eye of a man who had lived with blindness for more than 30 years, enabling him to recognise letters and numbers, grasp objects and navigate around obstacles.

The procedure was performed in July 2026 at Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University in Hubei Province, China, on a patient identified only by his surname, Qiu, according to a report by China Daily published on Thursday.

The technology uses a chip implanted in the outer wall of the eyeball to stimulate nerve pathways, allowing the brain to interpret electrical signals as patterns of light.

Although it does not restore natural vision, the development has shown potential to improve the independence of people with certain forms of blindness.

Qiu uses specially designed glasses fitted with cameras that capture images of his surroundings and convert them into electrical signals.

These signals are transmitted wirelessly to the chip implanted in the sclera, the white outer layer of the eyeball. The device stimulates nearby nerve pathways, which relay signals to the brain’s visual cortex, allowing the patient to perceive visual patterns.

According to Xiao Xuan, vice-president of Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University, Qiu began rehabilitation training after resting for a month following the operation.

His progress reportedly exceeded the medical team’s expectations.

“Upon putting on the glasses, the patient immediately feels photoelectric stimulation and perceives light spots,” Xiao said.

She explained that after three weeks of training, conducted three times a week, Qiu was able to recognise and write down numbers, letters and Chinese characters. He could also grasp objects accurately and walk independently along visual markers.

However, Xiao said further systematic training would be necessary before he could read text accurately or distinguish objects with finer details.

She compared the rehabilitation process to a baby learning to understand the world, noting that patients must gradually learn to associate electrical signals with objects and their surroundings.

The implanted device is reportedly smaller than half a fingernail and does not penetrate the eyeball. It also operates without connecting wires running between the inside and outside of the eye or external magnetic attachments.

Xiao said placing the chip in the sclera could cause less damage than procedures that involve implanting devices directly against the retina.

The technology could potentially benefit patients with several conditions involving damage to the visual system, including retinitis pigmentosa, advanced age-related macular degeneration, advanced glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.

However, the treatment is not suitable for everyone. According to Xiao, patients whose eyeballs and optic nerves have been completely destroyed would not qualify.

Despite Qiu’s progress, the technology does not reproduce the full experience of natural sight.

Instead, electrical stimulation produces small points of light known as phosphenes, which combine into pixel-like patterns that help patients interpret their surroundings.

Xiao identified colour perception and the accurate mapping of signals between retinal nerves, the optic nerve and the brain’s visual cortex as major challenges researchers still need to address.

The long-term goal is to help people with certain forms of blindness perform everyday tasks more independently, including travelling alone, avoiding obstacles and identifying banknotes.

Qiu, who has worked as a massage therapist while living with blindness, said his condition had made travelling alone difficult and sometimes dangerous.

He recalled nearly being hit by an electric motorbike, an experience that left him reluctant to venture outside by himself.

He said he was pleased to be gradually regaining visual perception and hoped the technology would make daily life easier.

According to the report, Qiu experienced mild eye irritation during the initial electrical stimulation and adjustment of the device but adapted quickly.

While the implant represents a promising development in artificial vision research, further training and technological advances will be needed to improve the clarity and usefulness of the visual patterns it produces.
