The National Association of Nigerian Students NANS

Lagos State University has emerged winner of the southwest inter-tertiary debate organised by the National Association of Nigerian Students.

The competition with the theme, ‘Clash of Thoughts’, had contestants from University of Lagos, University of Ibadan, Ekiti State University, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta; Michael Otedola College of Primary Education, Epe, amongst others.

The grand finale of the competition took place on Thursday at the Buba Marwa Auditorium in LASU Ojo campus. LASU, represented by Shukroh Adeyemi and Titilope Ibrahim, got a rating of 88.3%, thus defeating the other nine institutions.

University of Lagos placed second with a rating of 84.3%, while University of Ibadan, Federal College of Education accrued a score of 80.3%.

The NANS inter-tertiary debate competition kicked off sometime in February with an essay competition, in which tertiary institutions in South-West zone participated.

Twenty-two institutions qualified to the semifinal stage, although only 19 showed up for it.

Speaking at the event, NANS President, Sunday Asefon, said, “The need to invest in a knowledge-based economy to drive our nations economy cannot be over-emphasised and institutions must be adequately empowered to be productive. We must build the Nigeria MIT, Harvard, etc who through innovations, research and technology are positively influencing the nation’s economy.

“A nation cannot develop beyond the quality of its educational institutions and we must deliberately do more to see a better and productive educational sector.”
