The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has postponed 24 first-round Copa del Rey matches following a deadly high-speed train collision in the province of Toledo that reportedly killed 64 people and injured more than 100.
The federation announced the decision on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, describing the postponement as an expression of respect and solidarity with the victims and their families.

In a statement published on its website, the RFEF said the Spanish football community was united in grief and ready to support the authorities in assisting those affected by the disaster.
“As a mark of respect and solidarity with all the victims of the tragic train accident that occurred on Wednesday morning in the province of Toledo, the RFEF has decided to suspend the 24 matches in the first round of the Copa del Rey originally scheduled for this afternoon and this evening,” the statement said.
The federation added that it would announce revised dates and kick-off times for the affected fixtures in due course.
The postponement followed a collision involving a Renfe high-speed train and a service operated by private railway company Iryo, south of Madrid.
The reported death toll rose to about 64, according to Castilla-La Mancha regional leader Emiliano García-Page, who spoke to reporters at the scene.
He warned that the number of fatalities could increase further.
More than 100 people were also reported injured as emergency workers continued searching for survivors amid wreckage scattered down an embankment.
Images from the scene showed damaged carriages lying on their sides, twisted metal and emergency vehicles moving between the crash site and nearby areas.
Helicopters were also deployed during the rescue operation.
Spain’s state railway operator, Renfe, confirmed that the main high-speed line connecting Madrid with southern Spain had been suspended following the accident.
Iryo said its train was carrying 147 passengers and five staff members, including the driver.
The company said the service had been struck from behind by the Renfe train.
Authorities were continuing to respond to the disaster as the country faced the aftermath of the collision.
The RFEF’s decision brought the affected Copa del Rey fixtures to a halt while the football community joined expressions of sympathy for those killed and injured.
