The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) reported that both the cyclist and the truck were coming from the Maryland axis when the cyclist failed to maintain a safe distance from the heavy-duty vehicle.
“Preliminary findings reveal that both the cyclist and the truck attempted to negotiate the roundabout under the bridge simultaneously. The cyclist could not maintain a safe clearance from the truck, resulting in him being violently crushed and dying on the spot,” said LASTMA’s Public Affairs head, Adebayo Taofiq, in a statement via X.
LASTMA operatives intercepted the truck driver, who had attempted to flee, and handed him over to the Ikeja Police Division for further investigation and prosecution.
Officials from the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit were called to remove the deceased and restore traffic flow.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and urged cyclists and commercial motorbike riders to exercise caution.
He highlighted ongoing sensitisation campaigns encouraging vulnerable road users to avoid high-risk corridors.
