NMDPRA: Dangote supplied 71% of Nigeria’s August petrol

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery supplied an average of 35.87 million litres of Premium Motor Spirit daily to Nigeria’s domestic market in August 2026, accounting for about 71 per cent of the country’s total domestic petrol receipts, according to the latest Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority data.

The figures underline the refinery’s growing role in Nigeria’s fuel market as domestic supply strengthens and petrol imports continue to decline.

The NMDPRA’s August 2026 State of the Midstream and Downstream Sector factsheet showed that domestic PMS receipts increased by 39 per cent, rising from 25.8 million litres per day in July to 35.9 million litres per day in August.

At the same time, petrol imports dropped by 26 per cent, from 19.7 million litres per day in July to 14.6 million litres per day in August.

The shift meant domestic petrol receipts exceeded imports by 21.3 million litres per day during the month.

The Dangote refinery produced an average of 41.94 million litres of PMS daily in August. Of that volume, 35.87 million litres went to the Nigerian market, while 9.73 million litres were exported.

The refinery ended the month with 360.4 million litres of PMS in stock.

Its average capacity utilisation stood at 105.21 per cent during August, reflecting the facility’s expanding contribution to Nigeria’s petroleum supply.

Overall PMS receipts increased by 11 per cent during the month, from 45.5 million litres per day in July to 50.5 million litres per day in August.

However, the increase in available supply did not translate into higher recorded domestic consumption.

The NMDPRA reported that PMS consumption fell by 14 per cent, from 48.3 million litres per day in July to 41.5 million litres per day in August.

The regulator explained that its consumption figures were based on volumes trucked out into the domestic market.

The latest Dangote petrol supply figures come as the Federal Government continues to promote domestic refining as a way of reducing Nigeria’s reliance on imported petroleum products.

The changing supply pattern is also reflected in crude deliveries to local refineries.

According to the NMDPRA, crude oil receipts by domestic refineries rose by 17 per cent, from 585,000 barrels per day in July to 683,000 barrels per day in August.

Between January and August, domestic refineries received 137.98 million barrels of feedstock. Domestic crude accounted for 109.88 million barrels, while imported seaborne crude contributed 28.10 million barrels.

Domestic crude therefore represented 79.64 per cent of total refinery feedstock during the eight-month period, compared with 20.36 per cent from imported crude.

Petrol stock sufficiency also improved slightly, rising from 22.4 days in July to 22.9 days in August.

The data showed a different trend in diesel supply. Automotive Gas Oil imports fell sharply by 84 per cent, from 7.9 million litres per day in July to 1.3 million litres per day in August.

Domestic diesel supply also declined by 16 per cent to 13.2 million litres per day.

Aviation fuel moved in the opposite direction, with total receipts increasing by 63 per cent from 1.9 million litres per day in July to 3.1 million litres per day.

The August figures point to a significant change in Nigeria’s petrol supply structure, with locally refined products now accounting for a substantially larger share of the market.

For petrol specifically, the Dangote refinery’s 35.87 million litres per day supplied to the domestic market was more than twice the 14.6 million litres per day recorded from total petrol imports during the same period.

The figures provide a powerful indication of how the expansion of domestic refining is reshaping Nigeria’s long-standing dependence on imported petrol, although the broader impact on pump prices and consumer costs will depend on crude supply, distribution costs, market conditions and other factors.
