Dino Melaye sparks debate over luxury outfit at Abuja protest

Dino Melaye luxury outfit criticism erupts as Ossai Success faults senator’s Fendi shirt worn at ADC protest in Abuja, sparking heated debate

Delta State Governor’s media aide and social commentator Ossai Ovie Success has criticised former Senator Dino Melaye over his appearance at an African Democratic Congress (ADC) protest at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja, triggering a wave of reactions online in what has become a heated Dino Melaye luxury outfit criticism debate.

Dino Melaye, a prominent political figure, attended the protest alongside other opposition leaders, including Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, during a demonstration challenging INEC’s decision regarding the party’s leadership recognition.

The protest, staged under the banner of “Save Democracy,” drew significant public attention as political leaders called for electoral reforms and institutional accountability.

However, attention soon shifted to Dino Melaye’s attire, with Ossai Success questioning the choice of a luxury Fendi polo shirt reportedly valued at £1,426, equivalent to about ₦2.6 million.

In a strongly worded social media post, Ossai described the outfit as inappropriate for a protest setting, arguing that the cost of the shirt could have been used to support youth employment initiatives in Nigeria.

The criticism quickly gained traction online, with Ossai expressing disappointment that a public figure demanding better governance would appear in such an expensive designer outfit at a civic demonstration.

He described the outfit choice as “disheartening,” suggesting that public sensitivity should guide the appearance of political actors during protests focused on national issues.

The comments have since sparked a wider debate across social media platforms, with Nigerians divided over whether personal fashion choices should be scrutinised in political activism.

Supporters of Melaye defended his right to personal expression and spending power, while critics argued that symbolism matters during protests advocating economic and social reform.

The controversy adds another layer to ongoing public discussions about political messaging, lifestyle choices of public officials, and the optics of activism in Nigeria’s democratic space.

As reactions continue to circulate online, neither Dino Melaye nor his team has issued an official response to the criticism at the time of filing this report.
