Don Jazzy says Afrobeats artists made better music when they lived together, sharing how Mo’Hits era inspired hit songs

Don Jazzy, a renowned Nigerian music executive and producer, has reflected on the early days of Afrobeats, saying the genre produced stronger and more creative records when artists lived together under the same roof.

Don Jazzy shares thoughts on Afrobeats artists, theory was shared during a recent appearance on the Crea8torium podcast, where he discussed how close-knit living arrangements within record label houses once fuelled creativity and collaboration.

Don Jazzy recalled his time at the Mo’Hits mansion, explaining how spontaneous studio moments and everyday interactions between artists often led to the creation of some of Afrobeats’ most iconic songs.

He cited the hit track “Olorun Maje” by D’Banj as an example, explaining that the idea originated from a casual exchange involving D’Prince and then-manager Sunday Are during their shared living period.

According to him, the inspiration emerged during a heated moment that unexpectedly turned into music when D’Prince began freestyling in the studio, leading to the birth of the track.

Don Jazzy highlights Afrobeats artists’ journey also referenced other spontaneous studio creations, including contributions from Dr Sid, which he said emerged from informal, unplanned sessions.

The producer noted that the modern music industry has changed significantly, with fewer artists living together, resulting in a different creative dynamic compared to earlier years.

However, he stressed that his personal approach has remained unchanged, as he continues to create music with specific artists in mind when entering the studio.

Don Jazzy encouraged younger creatives to build stronger connections and collaborate more closely, arguing that such cohesion can still produce powerful and timeless music.
