Dr Steven Adesemoye Appointment marks LASUSTECH’s drive to expand global partnerships and attract international staff and students

The Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) has appointed Dr Steven Anu’ Adesemoye as its pioneer Director of Advancement and Internationalisation, a strategic move aimed at strengthening the institution’s international profile, expanding global partnerships and attracting students and academics from around the world.

The appointment, which takes immediate effect, places Dr Adesemoye at the helm of a newly created office designed to advance the university’s global engagement agenda.

The office will coordinate institutional partnerships, promote LASUSTECH to international organisations and corporate stakeholders, and position the university as an increasingly competitive destination for research, teaching and academic exchange.

The Dr Steven Adesemoye Appointment comes at a significant stage in LASUSTECH’s evolution as the university continues to invest in technological innovation, research development and international collaboration.

University leaders see the establishment of the Directorate of Advancement and Internationalisation as an important step towards aligning the institution with global best practices in higher education.

Dr Adesemoye brings to the position an unusual blend of academic excellence, strategic leadership and media industry experience.

A Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication, he most recently served as the department’s Head from August 2024, a tenure widely recognised for strengthening academic standards and institutional development.

Beyond his departmental leadership, Dr Adesemoye has played key roles in advancing LASUSTECH’s external engagement.

As Team Lead for Digital and Creative Enterprise, he worked closely with the Vice-Chancellor to drive innovation initiatives, while also leading the university’s Digital Literacy Skills programme for traders in Ikorodu, a corporate social responsibility initiative that strengthened the institution’s relationship with its host community.

His academic credentials further reinforce his suitability for the role. He earned his doctorate from the University of Malaya in Malaysia and is a Fellow of the Business Journalism Professors Programme at the Donald W. Reynolds National Centre for Business Journalism, Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Arizona State University.

“I am deeply honoured to take up this assignment and grateful to the Vice-Chancellor for his belief in me.”

Before joining academia, Dr Adesemoye built an accomplished career in the creative industry, serving as Chief Operating Officer and TV Content Director at Digital Interactive Media and Origin 8 Format. During that period, he directed reality television productions in Nigeria and Ghana and produced documentary and distance learning drama content for international health communication programmes, experience that has strengthened his expertise in strategic communication and stakeholder engagement.

Expressing appreciation for the appointment, Dr Adesemoye described the opportunity as both an honour and a responsibility.

“I am deeply honoured to take up this assignment and grateful to the Vice-Chancellor for his belief in me. Building an office from the ground up is a rare privilege, and I intend to use it to open doors for LASUSTECH on the world stage,” he said.

He added that his immediate priorities include establishing a pipeline of international academic partnerships, implementing a coordinated strategy for recruiting international staff and students, and ensuring the university’s achievements receive stronger global visibility.

“I will work closely with colleagues across every college and department to ensure that our global engagement translates into tangible outcomes, including exchange agreements, joint research initiatives and a student and staff population that reflects our international ambition. I do not intend to simply hold this office; I intend to build it into a lasting engine of growth for the university.”

The creation of the new directorate builds on LASUSTECH’s recent efforts to modernise its academic ecosystem following its transition from Lagos State Polytechnic to a specialised university of science and technology.

Since attaining university status, the institution has expanded its digital infrastructure, strengthened research capacity and pursued broader collaborations with industry and international academic partners.

Education analysts note that many universities across Africa are increasingly establishing dedicated advancement and internationalisation offices to diversify research opportunities, improve institutional rankings and attract global investment.

LASUSTECH’s latest appointment reflects that growing trend while signalling the university’s ambition to compete more strongly within the international higher education landscape.

With the new office now in place, the university is expected to intensify efforts to build strategic alliances, increase international visibility and create new opportunities for students, researchers and academic staff as it pursues its long-term vision of becoming a globally recognised institution.
