Enugu Air reschedules flights amid Abuja Airport crisis

Enugu Air flights faced fresh disruption in Abuja on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, after Enugu Air announced the rescheduling of some services through Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport following industrial action by aviation union workers.

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, led by Director-General Captain Chris Najomo, also appealed to aviation unions to suspend the action as efforts continued to resolve the dispute.

The airline said operations at the Abuja airport had been temporarily suspended after union workers reportedly denied its staff access to the terminal.

In a public notice issued on Tuesday, Enugu Air said the disruption could affect some flights operating through Abuja while the airline adjusted its network.

“Please be informed that due to an ongoing industrial action at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, where union workers are denying staff access into the airport terminal, operations at the airport have been temporarily suspended,” the airline said.

“Consequently, some of Enugu Air flights may experience rescheduling until further notice, as we work to adjust our network.”

Enugu Air apologised to affected passengers and said passenger safety and wellbeing remained its priority.

The airline advised travellers to check their email, SMS messages and official communication channels for updates before travelling to the airport.

Passengers requiring assistance with rebooking or other enquiries were also advised to contact the airline’s customer service team.

The disruption comes amid a wider industrial dispute between aviation unions and airline operators over issues surrounding statutory aviation charges and other grievances.

The National Union of Air Transport Employees and the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria previously issued a 14-day ultimatum to airline operators over alleged non-remittance of the statutory five per cent Ticket Sales Charge.

The unions argued that the money was required to support aviation agencies and safety-related functions.

The dispute has placed additional pressure on an aviation sector already dealing with rising operating costs and financial challenges.

In May, the NCAA placed 11 domestic airlines, including Air Peace and Ibom Air, on a no-pay-no-service list over outstanding statutory charges.

The regulator subsequently suspended that directive after consultations with industry stakeholders.

The latest airport disruption has now moved the dispute beyond financial disagreements, with passengers facing the immediate consequences through delays, rescheduling and uncertainty over planned journeys.

Captain Chris Najomo, the NCAA Director-General, appealed to the unions to “sheathe their swords and exercise restraint” while efforts continued to resolve the disagreement.

The regulator said a meeting convened by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, had been intended to address the grievances. According to the NCAA, the meeting could not proceed after airline operators failed to attend.

The Ministry of Aviation has previously sought to use dialogue between unions, airlines and aviation agencies to prevent industrial disputes from disrupting services.

In an earlier engagement, Festus Keyamo urged striking unions to suspend industrial action and return to negotiations.

For passengers, the immediate concern is whether affected services will resume quickly enough to minimise further disruption.

Enugu Air has therefore asked passengers booked on Abuja-related services to rely on direct airline updates rather than travelling to the airport without confirmation.

The airline’s official website lists Abuja among its destinations and provides booking and customer-support services for passengers.

The NCAA has also maintained that the industrial action has not compromised aviation safety, stressing that its statutory safety oversight responsibilities remain in place.

As negotiations continue, the pressure is now on the unions, airline operators and government authorities to reach a workable settlement and restore normal airport operations.

For affected travellers, checking flight status before leaving for the airport remains the most practical step while the dispute is being resolved.
