The command revealed the development in a statement released on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe.
The suspects — Chukwu Kelvin (25), Kenechukwu Ude (25) and Uche Nwankwo (28)** — were intercepted by the command’s Distress Response Squad during a routine stop-and-search operation along the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway at about 4:48 am on 20 October 2025.
According to the police, the trio were caught transporting vandalised aluminium cables hidden beneath cassava leaves in a white minibus marked ENU 450 XK.
Officers also recovered a large cable cutter, two pairs of rubber gloves and a bag containing clothes.
SP Ndukwe said the men confessed to removing the cables from electric poles along Ukete Road in Oduma community, with plans to sell the materials at the New Artisan Market in Enugu.
Commissioner of Police CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa reaffirmed the command’s strong commitment to eradicating criminal acts that jeopardise essential public infrastructure.
“We remain steadfast in fishing out vandals and other criminals bent on denying citizens vital amenities,” he stated, urging residents to continue assisting the police.
The suspects will be charged to court once the ongoing investigation concludes.
