EPL introduces 16-day international break from Sept 21

The EPL 16-Day International Break will begin on September 21, 2026, as the Premier League introduces a revised schedule approved by FIFA, marking the first time the traditional September and October international windows have been merged into a single extended period.

The Premier League confirmed that Matchweek 5 fixtures will conclude on September 20, after which the competition will pause until October 10, when Matchweek 6 resumes.

The development represents a significant shift in the global football calendar, aimed at reducing travel strain and improving player welfare.

According to the league, the new structure replaces the previous system of four separate nine-day international breaks held in September, October, November and March. Under the revised arrangement, the number of breaks between the start of the season and the end of the year has been reduced from three to two.

“The September and October breaks have been merged into one 16-day period, during which countries will play four matches rather than the standard two,” the Premier League said.

The EPL 16-Day International Break is expected to see a packed schedule of fixtures across different confederations.

European nations will continue their UEFA Nations League campaigns, while African countries will compete in Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, with each side playing two matches.

In North America, teams will feature in a mix of CONCACAF Nations League group fixtures and friendlies, with the United States and Mexico already through to the quarter-finals and expected to play exhibition matches.

Asian nations will also engage in friendlies as part of preparations for the 2027 Asian Cup, following the conclusion of qualification rounds.

South American teams are similarly scheduled to play friendly matches, ensuring that the international window remains active across all major football regions.

The Premier League noted that the change was unanimously approved by the FIFA Council in 2023, with player welfare cited as a central factor.

The revised calendar is also intended to limit the frequency of long-distance travel for players, particularly those representing countries outside Europe.

“With many players in Europe representing countries in Africa and South America, the idea behind the new calendar is to reduce the number of separate periods in which players fly across continents,” the league explained.

Despite the 16-day duration, the break may feel longer for clubs and supporters due to scheduling patterns.

Players often return to their clubs days before domestic matches resume, effectively extending the pause in competitive league action.

The November international break is scheduled to run from November 9 to 17, between Matchweeks 10 and 11, while the final break of the season will take place from March 22 to 30, between Matchweeks 30 and 31.

Historically, the international break system was introduced in 2002 under the FIFA International Match Calendar to regulate player release for national team duties.

The structure has evolved over time to accommodate increasing fixture demands and global competitions.

The Premier League also highlighted that major tournaments such as the FIFA World Cup and continental competitions can be staged within FIFA windows, even when they overlap with domestic off-season periods.

For instance, the Africa Cup of Nations previously held between December and January required clubs to release players without a corresponding league break.

While discussions have taken place around further reducing international breaks, the current framework is expected to remain in place until at least 2030.

The EPL 16-Day International Break marks a decisive and strategic adjustment to the football calendar, reflecting a growing emphasis on player welfare, logistical efficiency and the demands of an increasingly globalised game.
