Chief Femi Falana says Nnamdi Kanu’s trial is political and should be resolved outside court, urging judicial reforms to help ordinary Nigerians.

Umuahia, Abia State – Renowned human rights lawyer Chief Femi Falana has called for the trial of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to be resolved politically rather than through the courts.

Falana, speaking during a visit to Governor Alex Otti at his country home in Umuehim Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South council area, argued that there is no valid reason why Kanu’s matter cannot be settled outside the courtroom.

“I cannot comment on pending proceedings. Like you said, the case was in court today, but I believe that it is a matter that should be sorted out outside the courtroom,” he said.

He likened the situation to government negotiations with bandits and criminal elements, stressing that a political solution is the most appropriate way forward.

On the subject of judicial reforms, Falana lamented the lack of access to justice for ordinary Nigerians, asserting that only politicians and elites have the resources to navigate the legal system effectively.

“Right now, we have a lot of access to justice by politicians. Only their cases move in court because political cases are time-bound,” he stated.

Falana urged the promotion of alternative dispute resolution methods, noting that many Nigerians resolve conflicts through traditional rulers and community leaders rather than Western courts.

“The majority of our people do not go to the Western courts. They patronise traditional rulers and community leaders to resolve problems,” he said.

He called on Nigerian governments, including Abia State’s administration, to reform customary courts and strengthen community justice mechanisms so they can better serve ordinary citizens.

“So, if people have confidence in their community leaders to dispense justice, we must promote such fora,” Falana added.

Falana also commended Governor Otti for his visible achievements in office, highlighting improvements in infrastructure such as roads, schools, and hospitals.

“I have seen evidence of physical development. I have gone around and seen good roads, good schools, and hospitals, and I am confident the Governor can do much more,” Falana said.

He emphasised the importance of ensuring that ordinary citizens benefit from democratic dividends and called on the Governor to continue focusing on the welfare of the people.
