Justin Madugu and the Super Falcons technical crew have been ordered to step down following Nigeria’s disappointing WAFCON campaign and failed World Cup qualification bid
The Nigeria Football Federation has directed Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu and members of the team’s technical crew to step down with immediate effect, following Nigeria’s disappointing 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign and failure to secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The NFF Executive Committee announced the decision on Monday, August 17, 2026, in a brief statement that did not give a specific reason for the directive.
“The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation has asked members of the technical crew of the @NGSuper_Falcons to step down with immediate effect,” the federation said.
The decision brings an abrupt end to Madugu’s latest spell in charge of the senior women’s national team, after a campaign that began with a difficult defeat and ultimately left the 10-time African champions facing the prospect of missing a major global tournament.
Nigeria opened their WAFCON title defence with a 3-2 defeat to tournament debutants Malawi in Rabat on July 28. The result was one of the early shocks of the competition, with Malawi claiming their first victory at the tournament.
The Falcons recovered from that setback and progressed from Group C, but their campaign ended in the quarter-finals against Cameroon.
Cameroon subsequently went on to win the WAFCON title, adding further weight to the difficult circumstances surrounding Nigeria’s exit.
The tournament was particularly important because it also offered a route towards the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Nigeria’s failure to progress far enough meant the Falcons had to pursue another qualification route through a playoff against South Africa.
That opportunity also ended in defeat, leaving Nigeria without the straightforward qualification path the NFF had targeted before the tournament.
The federation had made its expectations clear before the competition.
At its July 11 executive committee meeting, the NFF charged the Super Falcons to win a World Cup ticket and retain their continental title for a record-extending 11th triumph.
Madugu, meanwhile, had approached the South Africa playoff with confidence, saying the Falcons were determined to make the most of their “second chance” to qualify for the World Cup. (Punch Newspapers)
That second chance ultimately disappeared, prompting the latest shake-up.
The decision also marks another change in the technical leadership of a team that has experienced considerable instability in recent years.
In September 2024, the NFF approved Madugu to lead the Super Falcons following the departure of Randy Waldrum, with the Nigerian coach initially placed in charge pending the appointment of a substantive head coach.
Madugu had also previously been part of the Falcons’ technical set-up alongside Edwin Okon after the federation moved to rejig the team’s coaching structure.
For Nigeria, the latest development comes against a wider backdrop of frustration in the national teams.
The Super Eagles also failed to qualify directly for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after finishing second in their qualifying group.
Nigeria subsequently reached the African playoff final but lost to the Democratic Republic of Congo 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time.
That means Nigeria’s senior men’s and women’s teams have both endured significant World Cup qualification disappointments within the same cycle.
The NFF has yet to announce who will take charge of the Super Falcons following the departure of Madugu and the rest of the technical crew.
The immediate priority will be to restore stability around a team whose status as one of Africa’s most successful women’s football sides has placed considerable expectations on its coaches.
Nigeria’s record in the continental competition remains formidable, but the latest campaign exposed areas that the federation will now be expected to address, particularly as preparations begin for the next stage of the Falcons’ international programme.
The NFF’s decision therefore represents more than a routine coaching change.

It is a clear response to a disappointing campaign and a signal that the federation intends to reassess the technical direction of the Super Falcons after a season in which expectations and results fell sharply out of alignment.
