Fayose blasts Adeleke, Davido over Tinubu, Wike meeting

The businessman says political allies who backed Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke have been left disappointed by his recent engagement with APC figures.

Fayose blasts Adeleke, Davido over Tinubu, Wike meeting

Prince Isaac Fayose, Nigerian businessman and social commentator, has criticised Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke and Afrobeat singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, following their recent meetings with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike in Abuja.

Fayose’s comments came after Governor Adeleke, who secured a second term in the August 15 Osun governorship election, visited President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa before meeting Wike.

Davido was also seen with his uncle during a separate gathering involving the FCT minister.

In a statement reported by Daily Post, Fayose expressed disappointment that political figures and supporters who had stood behind Adeleke during the election were now engaging with leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

“Look at Osun, I was in Australia and Adeleke called me, I offered my support. Six days later, the governor is in Abuja, presenting to the president his certificate of return,” Fayose said.

Fayose further claimed that he had rejected financial inducements and a G-Wagon during the political period, although the allegation was presented as his personal account and has not been independently verified.

“They offered me money, and I declined. They offered me a G-Wagon, but I still declined,” he said.

The remarks followed a politically significant week for Adeleke.

The governor was declared winner of the Osun governorship election after polling 511,067 votes, defeating APC candidate Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, who recorded 444,815 votes.

Adeleke won by 66,252 votes and secured victory in 19 of the state’s 30 local government areas.

Adeleke subsequently received his Certificate of Return from the Independent National Electoral Commission in Osogbo on August 19.

The ceremony formally marked the next stage of his return to office for another four-year term.

The governor’s meeting with Tinubu on Thursday, August 20, was held behind closed doors at the Presidential Villa.

Adeleke presented his certificate of return to the President, marking his first reported meeting with Tinubu since the election.

Adeleke later visited Wike in Abuja.

A photograph shared by Wike’s media aide, Lere Olayinka, showed the two politicians shaking hands while holding the governor’s certificate of return.

The meetings have attracted attention partly because of the political divide surrounding the Osun election.

Wike had previously said that President Tinubu could have secured an APC victory in Osun if the President had wanted to pursue the contest “at all costs”.

Davido has also remained closely associated with his uncle’s political journey.

Following Adeleke’s victory, the singer praised the Osun electorate and argued that the governor’s performance in office had helped secure the renewed mandate.

Fayose, however, sees the post-election engagements differently.

His criticism reflects the frustration among some opposition supporters who view Adeleke’s meetings with senior figures in the APC-led Federal Government as a political realignment.

The governor has not indicated that the meetings amount to a formal defection or alliance with the APC.

His engagement with Tinubu and Wike can also be viewed within the broader tradition of political office holders maintaining working relationships across party lines, particularly after an election.

Fayose extended his criticism to the wider opposition landscape, expressing disappointment that Dr Wole Oluyede, whom he supported during the Ekiti State governorship election, had also moved closer to the ruling party.

The development highlights the fluid nature of Nigerian politics, where electoral competition can be followed by negotiations, consultations and relationships that cross party boundaries.

For Adeleke, the immediate challenge will be to translate his renewed mandate into governance while managing expectations among supporters and political allies who helped secure his victory.

For Fayose, the episode has instead become a pointed reminder of what he sees as the difficult realities of political loyalty after an election.
