The Federal Civil Service Commission, through its Head of Press and Public Relations, Ibraheem Zakariyya, warned Nigerians against FCSC recruitment scams involving fake job messages, fraudulent links and individuals claiming to have influence over federal appointments.
The commission said genuine recruitment into the federal civil service is not handled by private agents, middlemen or individuals promising to secure shortlisting or appointment for applicants.

The warning comes as recruitment-related messages continue to circulate across social media platforms, WhatsApp groups and unofficial websites, where unsuspecting job seekers can be persuaded to surrender personal information or make payments.
“The genuine federal civil service recruitment is never conducted through private agents, middlemen, or individuals claiming to influence shortlisting or secure appointments,” the commission said.
The FCSC also cautioned Nigerians not to assume that a recruitment message is authentic simply because it carries the commission’s name, logo or other official-looking branding.
According to the commission, a legitimate appointment into the Federal Public Service requires an authorised establishment and, where necessary, a recruitment waiver from the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.
The recruitment process is also governed by established public service procedures.
Under Rule 020102(i) of the Public Service Rules 2021, vacancies for positions on Grade Levels 07 to 17 are advertised as they arise through three national newspapers and the commission’s official website.
Applicants are expected to meet the qualifications and eligibility requirements specified in the relevant Schemes of Service before applying.
The commission’s latest warning echoes previous alerts over increasingly sophisticated recruitment fraud targeting Nigerians searching for government jobs.
In April 2025, the FCSC disowned a purported shortlist circulating online and warned that fraudsters were using fake recruitment information to solicit money from job seekers.
The commission said legitimate shortlisted candidates would be notified and the information publicly announced through its official channels.
Similar scams have appeared repeatedly over the years.
In 2024, the Federal Government warned that fake online publications claiming to offer Federal Civil Service employment were being circulated by fraudulent recruitment syndicates.
The government said official recruitment exercises would be announced through the FCSC’s recognised channels.
The pattern has also been documented by independent fact-checkers.
Africa Check previously found a fake FCSC recruitment link that directed users to a suspicious website and sought personal information, illustrating how fraudulent recruitment adverts can be used to harvest data from job seekers.
The FCSC has therefore urged prospective applicants to be particularly wary of anyone requesting money for recruitment forms, shortlisting, appointment letters or preferential treatment.
The commission said applicants should not provide personal information or make payments in response to unsolicited messages received through WhatsApp, social media, blogs or unofficial websites.
“Where online applications are required, applicants should access the designated recruitment portal only through links provided in official FCSC announcements,” the commission said.
The warning is especially significant for young Nigerians facing a competitive employment market, where the prospect of securing a federal government position can make applicants vulnerable to promises of guaranteed appointments.
The commission further cautioned that submitting false declarations, forged certificates or fraudulent documents during recruitment could result in disqualification and other consequences under applicable regulations.
The FCSC has repeatedly stressed that legitimate recruitment is subject to formal government procedures rather than personal connections or payments.
In an earlier official warning, the commission stated that it does not charge applicants for recruitment exercises.
For job seekers, the safest approach is therefore to verify recruitment announcements directly through official government channels before clicking links, submitting documents or sharing sensitive information.
The commission advised prospective applicants to carefully check every official vacancy announcement for the available positions, required qualifications, eligibility conditions, application procedure and closing date.

With fake recruitment networks continuing to exploit the hopes of job seekers, the FCSC’s latest warning serves as a timely reminder that an attractive government job offer can quickly become a costly trap when it comes through an unofficial channel.
