Fela Kuti makes history as the first African artist inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, marking a landmark moment for Afrobeat music

The announcement was made in the United States during a broadcast of American Idol, where organisers unveiled this year’s inductees, placing the late Afrobeat pioneer in the Early Influence category.

The Fela Kuti Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction cements his status as one of the most influential musicians in modern history, decades after his revolutionary sound reshaped global music culture.

He now joins an elite list of honourees, including Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Gram Parsons, and Celia Cruz, in recognition of his lasting artistic and cultural impact.

Fela Kuti’s music, which fused jazz, funk, highlife, and traditional African rhythms, became a powerful voice against political oppression, corruption, and social injustice, earning him global admiration and enduring relevance.

His induction is being widely described as a defining moment for African music, reflecting how Afrobeat continues to inspire generations of artists across continents from Lagos to New York and beyond.

The honour comes months after he also received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, further reinforcing his legacy as a cultural icon whose influence transcends time.

In a further boost for African representation, Nigerian-born British soul singer Sade Adu has also been named for induction in the performance category.

Her recognition highlights the global impact of artists with African heritage in shaping contemporary music across genres and generations.

However, several global superstars, including Shakira, Mariah Carey, Lauryn Hill, New Edition, and Pink, reportedly missed out on the final selection despite multiple nominations.

Industry voting involved more than 1,200 artists, historians, and music professionals who helped determine this year’s class of inductees.

The announcement has sparked widespread celebration online, with fans hailing Fela Kuti’s induction as long overdue recognition for his contribution to global music and cultural activism.
