Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, captained by Azeezat Oduntan and guided by head coach Akeem Busari, secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over Venezuela in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup quarter-final at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat, Morocco, on Sunday, November 1, 2026, booking their place in the semi-finals against Brazil.

Oduntan proved decisive in the closing moments, converting an 89th-minute penalty to end Venezuela’s stubborn resistance and keep Nigeria’s hopes of winning their maiden title in the competition alive.

The encounter remained goalless for much of the evening, with Nigeria enjoying considerable attacking pressure but struggling to find a way past Venezuelan goalkeeper Valeria Rebanales, whose impressive saves kept her side in contention.

The Flamingos began with attacking intent, creating several opportunities through Tosin Rafiu, Mary Dunstan, Oluebube Umejiaku and their teammates.

However, Venezuela maintained a disciplined defensive shape, limiting Nigeria’s ability to turn their territorial advantage into goals.

Nigeria continued to search for an opening after the interval, with Busari introducing Precious Oscar for Oluwakemi Adegbuyi in the 57th minute as the technical crew sought to inject fresh energy into the attack.

The breakthrough eventually came in the 88th minute when Oluebube Umejiaku was brought down inside the Venezuelan penalty area.

Following a review at the pitchside monitor, the referee upheld the penalty decision, giving Nigeria an opportunity to settle the contest.

Captain Oduntan stepped forward and converted from the spot a minute later, sending the Nigerian supporters into celebration and leaving Venezuela with little time to mount a response.

Venezuela pushed for an equaliser during seven minutes of added time, but the Flamingos remained composed to protect their advantage until the final whistle.

The victory also highlighted Nigeria’s resilience throughout the tournament.

After opening their campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Poland, the Flamingos recovered with victories over Puerto Rico (2-0), defending champions North Korea (3-1) and Mexico (2-1) before overcoming Venezuela.

Their qualification represents a return to the competition’s semi-final stage for the first time since 2022, when Nigeria finished third at the tournament in India after defeating Germany in the bronze-medal match.

Reacting to the victory, head coach Akeem Busari praised his players for their determination while acknowledging that the team had made mistakes during the encounter.

“We gave everything on the pitch tonight. We wanted to keep the ball and play our game, but we made some mistakes. Still, we kept pushing until the very end. Reaching the semi-finals is a dream come true for me and a great achievement,” Busari said.

Venezuela’s head coach, Dayana Frías, also acknowledged the narrow margin that separated the two sides, admitting that a costly mistake had contributed to her team’s elimination.

“It was a good performance overall, but I think we made one mistake and paid for it. As for the experience, it’s been really beautiful and rewarding,” Frías said.

With the victory, Nigeria now face a formidable challenge against Brazil, who booked their semi-final place with a 2-1 comeback victory over China in their quarter-final encounter.

The semi-final is scheduled for Wednesday, November 4, at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat, with a place in the final at stake.

For the Flamingos, the immediate task will be to build on their hard-earned victory, maintain their momentum and take another significant step towards securing Nigeria’s first FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title.
