Gbenga Daniel denies leaked audio, seeks probe

The media office of former Ogun State Governor and Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel has dismissed a purported leaked private conversation circulating online, describing the recording as manipulated and calling for a law enforcement investigation into its origin and distribution.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the OGD Media Office said it became aware of the audio recording more than six weeks ago after individuals allegedly attempted to use it for political blackmail, coercion and intimidation.

The office maintained that the Gbenga Daniel leaked audio was not authentic and alleged that the material had been deliberately altered to mislead the public and damage the former governor’s reputation.

“The audio in circulation is a manipulated and deliberately doctored material, calculated to mislead the public, malign the reputation of His Excellency, and advance a premeditated political agenda,” the statement said.

According to the media office, law enforcement agencies have been formally notified and asked to investigate the source of the recording, those allegedly responsible for manipulating and circulating it, and the motives behind its release.

The statement added that Daniel’s legal team had been instructed to pursue both civil and criminal action against any individual or group found to be connected with the alleged dissemination of the recording.

“In addition, our legal team has been instructed to pursue all available civil and criminal remedies against every individual or group connected with this orchestrated campaign of calumny, defamation, malicious falsehood, and cybercrime,” the statement added.

The media office concluded by calling for an end to what it described as the use of such tactics in Nigeria’s political environment, stating, “This shenanigans must stop in our body politics.”

The statement did not identify the individuals allegedly involved in creating or circulating the recording, and no independent verification of the audio or the allegations surrounding it was immediately available.

The development comes amid increasing concerns over the use of manipulated digital content in political disputes, with public figures across Nigeria increasingly raising allegations of misinformation, cybercrime and reputational attacks during periods of heightened political activity.
