‘Gladdened!’ Why I was very happy when Nigerian govt arrested IPOB leader, El-Rufai

The Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has said that he was very happy when the Federal Government of Nigeria arrested Nnamdi Kanu because the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, jumped bail and jeopardized his sureties.

El-Rufai explained that he was joyful because Kanu challenged the sovereignty and the authority of a state and incited violence, describing his own country as a zoo.

The governor said this in an interview on BBC Pidgin on Friday morning.

Recall that the leader of the separatist group was arrested last Sunday.

The Federal High Court in Abuja had on Tuesday ordered that Kanu be remanded in a Department of State Service (DSS) facility, pending the determination of his trial.

El-Rufai said, “I was very happy [when Nnamdi Kanu was arrested] because, first, he jumped bail, jeopardizing his sureties.

“Secondly, a person that challenges the sovereignty and the authority of a state and incites violence; he refers to his own country as a zoo.

“This should be a message to all these separatists challenging the authority of the Nigerian State to be very careful.”

Recalls that El-Rufai views IPOB as a proscribed organization that wants Nigeria to break up.

Meanwhile, In February this year, El-Rufai said that the only solution to end banditry in his state and Nigeria, in general, was to eliminate bandits, adding that paying ransom was not an option.

The governor claimed in April that the menace of banditry is beyond the capacity of the Nigeria Police Force, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, amid killings in Southern Kaduna.
