Global tributes Buhari death highlight his legacy. China, US, ECOWAS, and others praise Buhari’s leadership, unity efforts, and role in regional cooperation

Condolences have continued to pour in from across the globe following the global tributes Buhari death announcement.

Nations and institutions have paid tribute to the legacy of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, praising his dedication to national unity, public service, and regional peace.

The Government of the People’s Republic of China, through its embassy in Nigeria, described Buhari as “a resolute leader whose unwavering dedication to Nigeria’s unity and progress leaves an enduring legacy.”

The message added that Buhari’s “pivotal contributions to advancing China-Nigeria relations will forever remain etched in our shared history.”

The United States Diplomatic Mission to Nigeria also extended condolences, stating that Buhari’s life was defined by “service, discipline, and a commitment to restore integrity to public office.”

The U.S. acknowledged his efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and described him as a figure whose influence would continue to be felt.

President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone, also serving as the ECOWAS Chairman, expressed “profound grief” over the passing of his friend.

“The late President Buhari was a formidable statesman whose dedication to the service of his nation will remain a testament to his legacy,” Bio said.

He further praised Buhari’s “courageous commitment to the advancement of regional peace, stability, and economic integration.”

From the ECOWAS Commission, President Omar Alieu Touray lauded Buhari’s invaluable contributions to regional democracy and unity.

“ECOWAS salutes the memory of this distinguished statesman whose invaluable contributions greatly advanced democracy and regional integration,” he noted.

Geoffrey Onyeama, Nigeria’s former Minister of Foreign Affairs, called it “a truly sad day for Nigeria and Africa.” He praised Buhari’s integrity, modesty, and national dedication.

“President Buhari was a great leader and an even greater human being. Nigeria will miss him greatly,” Onyeama said.

These tributes reflect the deep respect Buhari earned across borders, with many recognising the consistency of his values and his commitment to Africa’s progress.
