Goodluck Jonathan 2027 ambition splits PDP as support builds across South-South, despite legal, political concerns

Although Jonathan has not officially declared, reports suggest he is under pressure from several political parties—including the PDP, NNPP, and ADC—to re-enter the race. His aides say consultations are ongoing.
Jonathan’s home state of Bayelsa remains neutral, with the PDP waiting on Governor Douye Diri’s stance. But across the South-South, reactions range from enthusiastic support to cautious skepticism.
In Edo State, the PDP welcomed Jonathan’s potential return, with Publicity Secretary Chris Nehikhare calling it a “breath of fresh air.”
Delta PDP leaders, too, expressed readiness to back the former president should he run on the party’s platform.
But in Rivers State, the situation is fractured. The faction aligned with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike dismissed the idea, citing Jonathan’s long absence from party affairs.
Conversely, supporters of suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara endorsed the move, highlighting Jonathan’s peaceful nature and governance track record.
In Akwa Ibom, party leaders say they will wait until Jonathan formally announces before taking a position.
Meanwhile, national PDP figures like Governor Bala Mohammed, Sule Lamido, and Jerry Gana have all expressed support, urging Jonathan to return to national leadership.
Despite mounting endorsements, questions persist about Jonathan’s eligibility due to constitutional amendments.
Section 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution, amended in 2018, bars anyone sworn in twice from running again.
However, a 2022 Federal High Court judgment in Yenagoa affirmed Jonathan’s right to contest, reigniting hope among his backers.
The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) expressed concern that Jonathan may be manipulated into a race that undermines Southern unity.
IYC President Jonathan Lokpobiri doubted Jonathan would run, citing potential reputational risks and political pitfalls.
PANDEF, the Pan Niger Delta Forum, reaffirmed its call for a Southern president in 2027 but stopped short of endorsing Jonathan.
Spokesman Dr. Obiuwevbi Ominimini emphasized the group’s commitment to regional fairness and would evaluate candidates closer to the elections.
Goodluck Jonathan 2027 ambition continues to stir debate across party lines, testing the PDP’s unity and the South-South’s political cohesion.
