UN chief Guterres warns against hegemonic approach to global crises

Guterres on global crises as UN chief urges nations to reject hegemonic actions and strengthen multilateral institutions for peace

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has urged nations to resist unilateral and hegemonic approaches to global challenges, stressing that shared responsibility and strong multilateral institutions remain essential to global peace and stability.

Speaking to journalists at UN Headquarters, Guterres described 2026 as “already shaping up to be a year of constant surprises and chaos,” warning that reckless actions across the world are triggering dangerous consequences.

Guterres cautioned against the growing transfer of influence from governments to private technology companies, warning that the absence of regulation around technologies that shape behaviour, elections, markets, and conflicts could deepen instability rather than drive innovation.

“Global problems will not be solved by one power calling the shots. Nor will they be solved by two powers carving the world into rival spheres of influence,” Guterres said.

He called for an accelerated shift towards a multipolar world that is “networked, inclusive by design, and capable of creating balance through partnerships.”

The Secretary-General underlined the enduring relevance of multilateral institutions, stating that legitimacy must be rooted in shared responsibility and shared values.

Referencing the UN Charter, he noted that while institutional structures may require reform, the values that underpin them remain critical for lasting peace and justice.

Outlining his final-year priorities, Guterres linked peace, development, and institutional reform.

He emphasised the pursuit of “just and sustainable peace rooted in international law,” alongside efforts to reform the UN Security Council, accelerate progress on the Sustainable Development Goals, and strengthen the global financial architecture.

On climate change and technology governance, Guterres called for equitable support for countries facing climate catastrophes and the establishment of global frameworks to regulate artificial intelligence.

“As we begin this year, we are determined to choose actions that generate concrete and positive reactions – reactions of peace, justice, responsibility, and progress in our troubled times,” he said.
