The Actors Guild of Nigeria lifts Halima Abubakar suspension, allowing her to participate in film projects and guild activities again

The Actors Guild of Nigeria, AGN, has officially lifted the suspension of Nollywood actress Halima Abubakar, reinstating her eligibility to participate in all guild activities and film projects.]

The announcement was made on Thursday, January 29, 2026, during the inauguration of the AGN’s new National Executive Council at the national secretariat.

Abubakar had been suspended indefinitely in October 2024 following allegations of defaming fellow actors and prominent Nigerians.

A two-year investigation conducted by a guild-appointed panel found her culpable, leading to her temporary exclusion from all AGN programs.

Outgoing AGN National President Emeka Rollas, whose tenure ended in December 2025, announced the reinstatement during the handover ceremony to incoming President Abubakar Yakubu.

Rollas cited both fairness and the actress’ livelihood as reasons for lifting the ban.

“There were persons that we have suspended according to the AGN law, and because I’m leaving office, I don’t want to leave them suspended,” Rollas said.

“Halima Abubakar took AGN to court claiming a frivolous amount of money, but we had our investigations and suspended her from all acting and AGN activities. Acting remains her main source of livelihood, and it would be wicked to leave her like that. Therefore, by the powers imposed on me by the Board of Trustees and the entire Actors Guild of Nigeria, I hereby lift Halima Abubakar’s suspension.”

Rollas also confirmed that suspensions on Christopher Igboji, Chidi Concord, Dan Ewerem, and Jeff Okwute, members of the Enugu State chapter, were similarly lifted.

The inauguration ceremony drew actors, filmmakers, and stakeholders from across Nigeria.

Chuks Chyke, Chairman of the Organising Committee for the event, praised Rollas for bringing stability and inclusiveness to the guild during his tenure.

The decision clears the way for Abubakar to resume professional engagements in Nollywood, while AGN signals a renewed commitment to due process and reconciliation among members.
