Community sources said the operation was led by youth leader Chidiebere Iweajunwa following what residents described as a thorough local investigation into the shocking crime.
The suspect, identified as Onyema Okonkwo, was reportedly captured after a video confession linked to the nursing student murder circulated widely on social media.
In the viral video, Okonkwo allegedly admitted that he and another suspect identified simply as Emmanuel stormed Achumba’s residence at about 7 p.m. before allegedly taking turns to rape her.
Sources within the community said the student had been living alone at the apartment after her two roommates travelled for their nursing practical experience.
“She was the only one in the house. The owner of the house is based in America. There were three students occupying the house, but two went for their nursing experience, leaving only her in the compound,” a community source said.
According to the suspect’s alleged confession, the attackers targeted the student after she rejected their sexual advances.
Okonkwo claimed he struck the victim with a stick while Emmanuel later returned with a knife.
“We wanted her to give us sex, she refused. We went to her house around 7 p.m. I had sex with her two times, Emmanuel had once.
After that, I hit her with a stick. I didn’t know Emmanuel returned with a knife to kill her,” the suspect allegedly said in the video.
The horrifying case has triggered outrage across the Obowo community, with residents demanding swift justice for the slain student.
Community members said the suspect had since been handed over to the police for further investigation and prosecution.
