Owerri trader killed in suspected illegal street racing incident

A tragic accident at the IMSU junction in Owerri claimed the life of a young trader identified as Chibuike on Sunday evening, 27 July 2026.

Illegal street racers struck the young man, identified locally as a mobile phone accessories seller, killing him on the spot.

The incident occurred barely 24 hours after another reckless drifting session at the same location.

On Saturday, a woman sustained severe injuries when a drifter crashed into her and damaged the perimeter fence of the Imo State University.

Despite that earlier crash, the group reportedly returned to the streets the following day.

Chibuike was said to be going about his daily business near the busy IMSU School Junction when the fatal collision happened.

Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with the young trader having little chance to avoid the speeding vehicles.

This IMSU street racers death has left many in the Owerri community devastated. Friends and fellow traders remembered Chibuike as a hardworking young man trying to earn a living in a challenging economy.

His sudden death highlights the grave dangers posed by unauthorised street racing on public roads, especially around busy university areas filled with students and traders.

Illegal street racing and drifting have become a recurring problem in several Nigerian cities. Young enthusiasts often organise these events with little regard for the safety of other road users.

Similar incidents in the past have led to calls for stricter enforcement, including vehicle impoundment and prosecution of participants.

Local residents have expressed deep frustration over the lack of sustained security presence in the area.

Authorities in Imo State are yet to issue an official statement on the latest fatality.

However, such tragedies often prompt temporary crackdowns, though many argue that long-term solutions, including dedicated enforcement teams and public awareness campaigns, are urgently needed.

The death of Chibuike serves as a painful reminder of the human cost of reckless behaviour on Nigeria’s roads.

As the community mourns, many hope this latest incident will finally push relevant agencies to take decisive action against illegal street racing.
