PAU declares campus safe after terrorist scare

Pan-Atlantic University has declared its Lagos campus safe after a tense Pan-Atlantic University bandit scare that led to an overnight security lockdown. Students have resumed normal activities

Pan-Atlantic University Vice Chancellor Professor Enase Okonedo announced on Wednesday 17 June 2026 that the institution’s campus in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, is now safe following reports of suspected bandit-like men on the premises the previous evening.

The private university had swiftly placed students on lockdown on Tuesday 16 June after security personnel spotted unauthorised individuals in the vegetated green areas of the campus along the Lekki-Epe Expressway.

A joint operation involving the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, Nigerian Army, and Nigerian Navy immediately swept the grounds.

In an official advisory issued by the Student Affairs Office, the university confirmed that extensive searches had found no immediate threat to the community.

“Following our communication last night regarding the security situation on campus, we are pleased to inform you that the situation is now under control and all clear,” the statement said.

It added that normal academic activities, including scheduled examinations, should resume immediately.

Students were, however, urged to remain vigilant, minimise unnecessary movement, and report any suspicious activity promptly.

The Pan-Atlantic University bandit scare caused understandable anxiety among students, many of whom reported hearing security-related sounds during the overnight operation.

The university has offered counselling support to any students affected by the incident.

This event comes amid broader security concerns affecting parts of Nigeria, although no arrests or further details about the suspected intruders have been publicly released so far.

University officials praised the swift collaboration with security agencies and thanked students for their cooperation during the tense period.

Professor Okonedo and management reiterated that the safety and well-being of every member of the university community remain their highest priority.
