IOC reviews troubled 2030 winter olympics plans

International Olympic Committee Coordination Commission Chair Pierre-Olivier Beckers, interim organising committee president Vincent Roberti, and IOC officials convened in Lyon, France, to begin a three-day inspection of preparations for the 2030 Winter Olympics.

The visit comes at a sensitive moment following the resignation of organising committee president Edgar Grospiron, who stepped down after months of internal tensions linked to governance and planning challenges.

Vincent Roberti has since assumed interim leadership as efforts continue to appoint a permanent successor.

Pierre-Olivier Beckers acknowledged the leadership transition while emphasising continuity in the project.

“President Grospiron has taken responsibility for his actions and decided it was time to bring in new leadership,” Pierre-Olivier Beckers said.

Despite the disruption, he added that organisers remain “on schedule” and that the IOC retains confidence in the Games’ delivery.

The IOC 2030 Winter Olympics review will see a delegation of around 30 officials assess key venues, particularly those designated for ice sports across the Lyon region.

The inspection is also expected to finalise the allocation of disciplines, a critical step in ensuring operational clarity ahead of the event.

A notable development in preparations has been the relocation of the ice sports centre from Nice to Lyon earlier in 2026.

The move followed opposition from Nice’s new municipal leadership to the installation of a temporary rink within a football stadium, prompting organisers to revise venue plans.

Secondary elements of the visit include consultations with local stakeholders and technical evaluations of infrastructure readiness.

The programme covers facilities expected to host 75 ice hockey matches, 150 curling contests, 16 figure skating sessions, nine short-track events, and synchronised figure skating competitions.

While leadership uncertainty has raised concerns, IOC officials have sought to strike a balanced tone, stressing both vigilance and optimism.

“We must take our time without wasting it and ensure we find the right person,” Pierre-Olivier Beckers noted regarding the search for a new president.

The Lyon inspection builds on France’s recent Olympic experience following the Paris 2024 Summer Games, widely regarded as a benchmark for organisational delivery.

However, the Winter Games present distinct logistical demands, particularly given the geographical spread of venues across the French Alps.

The IOC 2030 Winter Olympics review represents a pivotal checkpoint as organisers work to maintain momentum and public confidence.

With four years remaining, the focus now turns to stabilising leadership and ensuring that planning milestones continue to be met without further disruption.
