Jama’a Emir palace fire destroys apartments in Kafanchan as firefighters battle equipment failure during emergency response

A fire outbreak on Friday destroyed sections of the palace of the Emir of Jama’a in Kafanchan, headquarters of Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State, damaging residential apartments within the historic complex.

Sources told the News Agency of Nigeria that the affected structures formed part of the wing occupied by the Emir’s mother, with the Jama’a Emir palace fire triggering panic among palace residents and nearby communities.

The blaze reportedly began while family members were preparing for the early evening Magrib prayers, prompting an urgent evacuation as flames spread rapidly through parts of the building.

When journalists visited the palace late Friday night, smouldering debris and extensive burn marks were still visible, with several household items completely destroyed and sections of the apartments reduced to ashes.

Eyewitnesses said personnel of the Kaduna State Fire Service responded to a distress call but encountered operational setbacks after their pumping machine allegedly failed to start on arrival at the scene.

The equipment malfunction, residents said, delayed initial containment efforts and allowed the fire to spread, eventually consuming four flats before reinforcement teams and local volunteers helped bring the situation under control.

Community members were seen assisting palace officials in salvaging valuables and preventing the inferno from reaching other parts of the palace compound.

No casualties were recorded as of the time of filing this report, although the incident caused significant property damage and emotional distress within the royal household.

Residents and sympathisers later gathered at the palace to express solidarity with the Emir and his family, describing the incident as deeply unfortunate.

Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the fire, while officials had not issued an official assessment of losses at the time of reporting.

Local residents have since called for strengthened emergency response capacity and improved firefighting infrastructure to prevent similar incidents in the future.
