Kano State government boosts growth with bold reforms

Kano State Government launches power and housing reforms to boost growth, jobs, and infrastructure across 36 local councils

Kano State Government has unveiled two transformative initiatives aimed at revitalising infrastructure, stabilising power supply, and expanding affordable housing across the state.

In a statement issued on Sunday by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, the administration confirmed its plan to acquire majority shares in the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) and to construct 50 low-cost housing estates across 36 Local Government Areas beyond the Kano metropolis.

The acquisition of a controlling stake in KEDCO marks a decisive step in Governor Yusuf’s broader energy strategy, designed to strengthen electricity generation, transmission, and distribution in one of northern Nigeria’s largest economies.

Officials said the move would bring much-needed accountability and efficiency to a sector long burdened by poor service delivery and recurrent outages.

The Kano State Government emphasised that its investment in the power sector is expected to accelerate industrial growth, generate employment, and attract both local and foreign investment.

Kano’s heavy reliance on stable electricity for its manufacturing and commercial activities makes this development particularly significant.

Alongside the acquisition, the State Executive Council approved the presentation and adoption of the new Kano State Electricity Policy under the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy.

The policy provides a framework for sustainable energy development, integrating renewable sources and improving long-term energy security.

In a separate but complementary decision, the Kano State Government approved the construction of 50 low-cost housing estates aimed at easing the housing deficit and expanding access to affordable homes for low- and middle-income earners.

Each estate will include essential amenities such as access roads, electricity, and water supply, ensuring both comfort and sustainability for future residents.

Governor Yusuf described the initiative as a reflection of his administration’s unwavering commitment to equitable development and inclusive growth.

“Every part of the state deserves to feel the impact of good governance and modern infrastructure,” the governor said.

By aligning its housing and power reforms, the Kano State Government aims to transform Kano into a business-friendly, energy-secure hub that drives innovation, industrialisation, and prosperity across the region.
