Police in Kogi State have launched an investigation into the death of Maryam Usman, a 30-year-old nursery and primary school teacher in Ugbamaka, who died after she was allegedly assaulted for disciplining a pupil at Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School.
The incident occurred on 25 June 2026 when, according to police, one Abdullahi Ishaka and two women stormed the school and attacked Maryam Usman over her decision to discipline a pupil.
Kogi State Police Command spokesperson ASP Afusat Saliu confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday in Lokoja that the teacher sustained serious injuries during the assault.
She was initially treated at a local hospital in Ugbamaka before being referred to Iko-Ojo Hospital in Okpo for further care. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries on the same day.
Officers from Olamaboro Divisional Headquarters visited both the school and the deceased’s residence following a report of the incident.
Arrangements are now underway to convey her body to General Hospital, Ankpa, for a medical examination and autopsy to establish the precise cause of death.
The three suspects fled the scene before police arrived. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend them, after which the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department.
The police have pledged a discreet and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the dedicated young teacher.
This heartbreaking case has drawn attention to the risks educators sometimes face when carrying out their professional responsibilities in the classroom.
