No pastor has right to pass church to his son, says Kumuyi

Deeper Life founder says no church leader has the right to hand a ministry to a family member

Church Succession Claims take centre stage as Williams Kumuyi dismisses speculation about handing Deeper Life Ministry to his sons

Founder and General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, William Folorunso Kumuyi, has dismissed speculation about succession within the church, insisting that no General Overseer has the authority to hand a ministry over to a son or family member.

Kumuyi made the remarks in a video that has gained widespread attention online, addressing growing public curiosity over who could eventually lead the Deeper Christian Life Ministry after his tenure.

The respected televangelist said the church belongs solely to Jesus Christ and should not be treated as personal property that can be inherited by relatives.

Addressing the ongoing Church Succession Claims, Kumuyi said many people had sought information about his sons and questioned whether either of them would take over the leadership of the ministry.

According to Kumuyi, such assumptions misunderstand the nature of the church and its leadership structure.

“It is the church of the Lord Jesus Christ, and nobody has the right to hand it over to his son,” he said.

Drawing examples from biblical figures, Kumuyi noted that the Apostle Peter did not transfer leadership of the church to a son, while other early Christian leaders similarly did not establish family succession within the faith.

The veteran preacher stressed that the church remains Christ’s institution rather than the possession of any individual leader.

The comments have sparked fresh discussion about leadership transitions in large religious organisations, particularly within Nigeria’s influential Pentecostal and evangelical movements.

A notable aspect of Kumuyi’s statement was his direct response to public speculation, offering a rare and powerful insight into his views on church governance and succession planning.

While Church Succession Claims continue to generate debate across religious circles, Kumuyi maintained that the future leadership of the ministry should align with God’s will rather than family ties.

The Deeper Christian Life Ministry, founded in 1973, remains one of Nigeria’s largest Christian denominations, with a presence in several countries around the world.

Kumuyi concluded his remarks by reiterating that he has no intention of transferring the church to any of his sons, declaring that the will of God should ultimately prevail in determining the ministry’s future direction.
