Discover a shocking Lagos airport check-in scam I faced on a Virgin Atlantic flight. Stay vigilant to avoid luggage mix-ups and ensure travel safety. Read more!
This is what happened when I checked in for my Virgin Atlantic flight from Lagos to London on 21/9/25.
I was carrying just one suitcase, even though my allowance was two.
On arriving at the check-in desk and handing over my passport, a young man pushed in behind me and gave his own passport to the same official. He had one suitcase and a carry-on case with him. I noticed some Naira notes tucked inside the passport as he handed it over.
My mind instantly told me something shady was about to go down.
I objected, asking why two separate passengers would be checking in simultaneously, because there could easily be a mix-up, but the official quickly responded that the other passenger ‘had been here before’.
A tag was printed and another official reached over and fixed it to the guy’s suitcase. I insisted on checking, and lo and behold, my name was printed on it.
In other words, had I not being paying attention, a stranger’s luggage would have been checked in as mine, with all the security implications that entailed.

As I complained, all three of them looked uneasy and could barely keep up the pretence that it was a mistake. The tag was removed in my presence and my own suitcase properly tagged.
Let this serve as a warning to ALL passengers to be very attentive as they check-in their bags at the airport.
Watch out for Part 2.
