Lagos airport stowaway attempt halted as police intercept 14-year-old boy on tarmac, raising concerns over aviation security

The Airport Police Command at Murtala Muhammed International Airport on Monday intercepted a 14-year-old boy during a suspected Lagos airport stowaway attempt, after the minor was found on the airfield trying to access an aircraft unlawfully.

The incident was disclosed in a statement by ASP Mohammed Adeola, Police Public Relations Officer for the Airport Command, who said the boy was discovered on the tarmac while attempting to gain entry beneath an aircraft.

ASP Adeola described the act as a serious breach of aviation security protocols within what was termed a highly sensitive operational environment.

Preliminary findings indicated that the minor had entered a restricted zone without authorisation, an action that contravenes Sections 2 and 3 of Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria regulations and aligns with a stowaway attempt.

Following the interception, the boy was taken into protective custody in line with established procedures governing minors.

Authorities confirmed that the parents were promptly notified and that all interactions with the child were conducted in their presence.

The Command emphasised that the minor received appropriate care and welfare support throughout the process, reflecting adherence to child protection standards despite the gravity of the incident.

Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, Olufunke Ogunbode, reaffirmed the Command’s firm commitment to safeguarding aviation infrastructure, describing the airport as a critical national asset requiring strict compliance with security measures.

The Commissioner stressed that due process would be followed and urged parents to maintain close supervision of children, particularly in restricted and high-risk environments such as airports.

According to the Command, the case will proceed under juvenile justice procedures, with the minor expected to be charged before the appropriate juvenile court.

Authorities reiterated their resolve to maintain safety, security and order across airport facilities while upholding the rights and welfare of all individuals, especially minors.
