Chief Magistrate Mrs C. M. Kushanu of the Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Tuesday, 1 September 2026, ordered that 74-year-old cleric Joseph Adeniran be held at Kirikiri Correctional Centre after prosecutor ASP Adegoke Ademigbuji presented a charge of defilement involving Adeniran’s nine-year-old granddaughter.

The court did not take a plea. Mrs Kushanu directed that the file go to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice and listed the matter for 24 September 2026. Until then Joseph Adeniran remains in custody.

ASP Adegoke Ademigbuji told the court the alleged incident took place on 18 June 2026 at the defendant’s residence. He said a neighbour noticed bloodstains on the child’s clothing and asked what had happened.

The child, according to the prosecutor, said her grandfather had caused the bleeding. Police were called and Joseph Adeniran was arrested.

The charge is brought under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. That provision is used for sexual offences against children and is commonly sent to the DPP because a magistrates’ court cannot try the full offence.

No public record of an earlier conviction against Joseph Adeniran appeared in contemporaneous reporting. The case therefore stands, at this stage, as an untested allegation.

Lagos courts have handled a steady stream of similar remands in recent years, with some defendants later convicted at the High Court and others discharged when evidence failed. That mixed record is the proper backdrop for this file.

The neighbour’s intervention is the human hinge of the account. Without that observation the matter might not have reached the police.

The child’s statement, as relayed by the prosecutor, is now part of the case the DPP must weigh.

Joseph Adeniran’s status as a cleric will draw public attention, yet the court treated him as any other defendant facing a grave child protection charge.

Mrs Kushanu’s order was brief and procedural. ASP Adegoke Ademigbuji’s summary was likewise confined to the elements the police say they can prove.

The next decisive step is the DPP’s advice. Until that arrives, the nine-year-old remains protected by anonymity and Joseph Adeniran remains remanded. The law requires both caution and urgency. The court has so far applied the first.
