The state government says dealers and motorists face prosecution for illegally using dealer number plates on Lagos roads

The Lagos State Government has impounded 175 vehicles for alleged Lagos dealer plate abuse, warning motorists and vehicle dealers that the illegal or permanent use of dealer number plates could result in confiscation, impoundment and prosecution.

The enforcement was carried out by the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) as the state intensified efforts to ensure that vehicles operating on Lagos roads could be properly identified.

In a statement issued by the Director of Public Affairs at the Ministry of Transportation, Bolanle Ogunlola, the government said dealer number plates were issued only for specific and authorised purposes.

The permitted uses include authorised test drives, vehicle inspections, delivery or collection of vehicles, and the movement of unregistered vehicles from ports or approved dealer premises to designated locations.

The government stressed that dealer plates were not intended for routine private commuting or prolonged use on public roads.

They are also not permitted on vehicles that have already been sold but are being operated while awaiting permanent registration.

Following the latest enforcement exercise, the dealer plates recovered from the 175 vehicles will be confiscated, while the affected vehicles will undergo further investigation.

The state government also warned that vehicles operating with unauthorised, fake, obscured or improperly used registration numbers could face additional enforcement action.

Such measures may include vehicle impoundment and prosecution under applicable traffic laws.

The warning reflects the government’s broader effort to improve accountability within Lagos’s busy transport system, where accurate vehicle identification is important for enforcement, public safety and road management.

The government said proper registration and lawful use of number plates would help authorities establish vehicle ownership and identity while strengthening road safety measures.

The Lagos dealer plate abuse crackdown is expected to continue as part of the state’s wider enforcement of transport regulations.

Authorities urged vehicle dealers and motorists to comply with the rules rather than treating dealer plates as substitutes for permanent registration.

The government maintained that dealer number plates serve a limited administrative purpose and cannot lawfully be used as a permanent alternative to regular vehicle registration.
