Lagos lawmaker backlash projects sparks debate over inclusivity, representation and rising political tensions in the state

A Lagos-based lawmaker, Okey-Joe Onuakalusi, has come under intense criticism following remarks attributed to a prominent traditional title holder, Aare Kurunmi Kakanfo, over the perceived distribution of constituency development initiatives.

The controversy erupted after a public statement criticised the lawmaker’s record, alleging that projects and opportunities under his office disproportionately benefited a particular group, triggering wider debate on representation and inclusivity in Lagos politics.

The Lagos lawmaker backlash projects controversy has quickly gained traction across social media platforms, where reactions have ranged from support for the lawmaker’s development record to concern over rising ethnic rhetoric in political discourse.

At the centre of the dispute are a series of initiatives attributed to Onuakalusi, including healthcare outreach programmes, educational support schemes, vocational training, and small business grants within Oshodi-Isolo Constituency 2.

Among the highlighted projects are medical outreaches in Okota, Ejigbo and Ajah, distribution of school materials, construction of classroom blocks, and empowerment programmes providing equipment and financial support to hundreds of households.

Supporters argue that the initiatives reflect a broad-based effort to improve living standards across communities, regardless of background.

Critics, however, have questioned the perceived distribution of benefits, raising concerns about equity and political representation in one of Nigeria’s most diverse urban centres.

The development underscores deeper sensitivities around identity, politics, and resource allocation in Lagos, a city long characterised by its multicultural population and complex political dynamics.

Analysts warn that such disputes, if not carefully managed, could heighten social tensions and distract from governance priorities.

The Lagos lawmaker backlash projects debate also comes amid a broader national conversation about political inclusion, fairness in public office, and the role of elected officials in serving diverse constituencies.

As reactions continue to unfold, observers say the situation highlights the need for measured public discourse and a focus on unity in Nigeria’s evolving democratic landscape.
