Blue Lagos, a Lagos-based non-profit advocacy and community development organisation, on July 24, 2026, monitored the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Continuous Voter Registration exercise at Etegbin Registration Centre in Oto-Awori Local Council Development Area, Ojo Local Government Area, Lagos State, while supporting residents of remote riverine settlements to participate in the democratic process.

The initiative was designed to address practical challenges facing communities separated from mainland registration centres by waterways and limited transport options.

Through community mobilisation and local boat arrangements, Blue Lagos assisted prospective registrants from Esofin and Egan communities in reaching the Etegbin registration location.

The organisation’s intervention provided a vital link between residents and the ongoing registration exercise, helping eligible citizens who might otherwise struggle with transportation costs, distance, or accessibility concerns.

At the Etegbin Registration Centre, the Blue Lagos team observed INEC officials carrying out voter registration activities, engaged with residents, and assessed the overall accessibility of the process for people travelling from surrounding riverine areas.

Blue Lagos representatives also visited Local Government Primary School, Ilege, which serves residents in the Abomiti riverine axis of Epe Local Government Area.

The visit allowed the team to observe participation levels, interact with registrants, and understand the experiences of communities using the facility.

The organisation said its monitoring exercise was part of a wider commitment to promoting equal access to civic opportunities, particularly for communities where geographical conditions can create additional barriers.

“Voter registration remains a critical component of inclusive governance, and eligible citizens in riverine and coastal communities should have the opportunity to participate without being limited by transportation challenges,” Blue Lagos said.

The INEC Continuous Voter Registration exercise is being conducted nationwide to enable eligible Nigerians to register as voters, transfer their registration where necessary, and update their details ahead of future elections.

Riverine communities across Lagos often experience distinct logistical challenges due to their dependence on waterways for movement.

Community-led interventions such as transportation support and mobilisation can play an important role in improving access to essential public services.

The Blue Lagos initiative highlights the importance of ensuring that civic participation extends beyond easily accessible urban areas.

By engaging directly with coastal communities, the organisation is working to strengthen inclusion and encourage greater participation in Nigeria’s democratic processes.

Blue Lagos urged eligible residents in riverine and coastal communities to take advantage of the registration exercise and complete necessary voter registration procedures.

The organisation continues to promote inclusion, sustainable development, and citizen participation across Lagos State through community engagement, advocacy, and strategic partnerships.
