A landlord in Ogun State narrowly escaped death when a telecom mast collapsed onto his home during heavy rain, prompting police to issue a directive for structural integrity checks on masts near residential areas

The landlord, who was reportedly inside the house at the time, sustained minor injuries from the accident and is now in stable condition after receiving prompt medical attention.

The spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, CSP Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Wednesday.

Odutola stated that the command received a distress call at approximately 2:39 PM on Tuesday from Mr. Moses Olalere, who reported the “natural disaster.”

She detailed the account: “On June 3, 2025, at about 14:39 hrs, the Ogun State Police Command received a distress call from Mr. Moses Olalere reporting a natural disaster during a heavy downpour. According to his eyewitness account, a communication mast belonging to IHS Company, located in Ajuwon, Akute, Ogun State, collapsed due to the severe weather conditions. The mast fell on a residential building in Unity Estate, Alagbole.”

Fortunately, the landlord, who was inside the house at the time of the incident, survived with minor bruises. He was promptly attended to by medical personnel and is confirmed to be in stable condition.

In response to the alarming incident, the Commissioner of Police (CP), Lanre Ogunlowo, has issued a directive for heightened awareness and public sensitization across the state to prevent a recurrence of such accidents.

The CP has reportedly instructed Area Commanders to urgently engage with companies owning masts situated near residential areas to assess their structural integrity and ensure the safety of lives and property.

A preliminary investigation into the incident has reportedly commenced, and members of the public will be notified of further developments.
