Faith Alayande died after a rooftop fall at the Lagos campus hostel, with police and the institution investigating the circumstances

The Nigerian Law School has launched an investigation into the death of 23-year-old Faith Alayande, a student of the Enugu campus undergoing externship at the Lagos campus, after she was found unresponsive following a rooftop fall at the Lagos hostel on Friday, August 7, 2026.

Aderonke Osho, Secretary to the Council and Director of Administration at the Nigerian Law School, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday, saying preliminary information indicated that Alayande fell from the hostel rooftop at about 4am.

“Preliminary information indicates that, at about 4:00am on Friday, 7 August 2026, the student fell from the rooftop of the hostel at the Campus and, sadly, succumbed to the incident,” Osho said.

The circumstances surrounding the fall remain unclear, with the Law School saying it is working with the appropriate authorities and Alayande’s family to establish what happened.

The Lagos State Police Command has also confirmed that an investigation is underway. Police said the hostel matron reported the incident after the student was found unresponsive on the premises.

Operatives visited the scene and evacuated Alayande’s body to a morgue, according to the police account.

The parallel investigations are expected to establish the circumstances leading to the fatal fall, including what happened in the period immediately before the incident.

The Law School described the death as a tragic development and expressed condolences to Alayande’s family, colleagues and others affected by her death.

“The Nigerian Law School is deeply saddened by this tragic development,” Osho said.

The institution said Alayande was enrolled at its Enugu campus but was participating in an externship programme at the Lagos campus at the time of her death.

Externship placements form part of the practical training undertaken by law students, giving students exposure to legal practice and professional environments outside their main campus.

The death has therefore come at a particularly difficult point in Alayande’s professional journey, as she was undergoing practical training towards qualification as a lawyer.

The family has requested privacy while mourning her death, and the Law School appealed to members of the public and the media to respect that request.

“The Management of the Nigerian Law School respectfully appeals to everyone to honour the family’s wishes and refrain from any actions that may further compound their grief at this difficult moment,” the statement said.

The institution also reaffirmed its commitment to the safety, welfare and wellbeing of its students and staff.

At present, the Law School and police have not publicly suggested that the death resulted from foul play, nor have they established why Alayande was on the rooftop at the time of the incident.

That distinction remains important as the investigation continues. The preliminary account establishes that a fatal fall occurred, but the circumstances surrounding it have yet to be fully determined.

The tragedy also places renewed attention on the responsibility of educational institutions to maintain safe residential environments for students, particularly where hostels include elevated areas and rooftop access.

For Alayande’s family and colleagues, however, the immediate reality is the loss of a young student whose legal career was still taking shape.

The Law School said it would provide further information as appropriate once the relevant procedures and investigations have progressed.
